NorthLink Ferries are delighted to sponsor the Sanday Seal Cam again. This is a great watch during late October, November and December – when grey seals come ashore to give birth!

Sanday’s Sealcam is ignored by the animals, so the whole cycle of birth, feeding, weaning, and first swims of the pups can be observed without disturbance from the comfort of your own home.

We hope you enjoy seal watching! 🦭 https://www.northlinkferries.co.uk/seals/

The Northern Lights, or the Aurora Borealis season has well and truly begun.

In fact, here in Orkney, we call them the Merry Dancers as they light up the clear skies and cold nights.

Orkney is one of the best places to see them, with limited light pollution and few obstructions across the islands.

Where is your favourite spot to see the Merry Dancers? This image by Graham Campbell is taken in front of the Italian Chapel, Orkney

In order to continue to meet any increased demand on the Pentland Firth, NorthLink Ferries have introduced further additional sailings between Stromness and Scrabster during May and June 2023 on Thursdays. It means there will now be four return sailings across the Pentland Firth on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Mondays. There is already an additional third crossing to Scrabster on Sundays.

These sailings are now available to book online.

If you have heard enough fiddle and accordion music, or just want a break for an hour or two during the Folk Festival, why not pop outside to Stromness Pierhead around 3pm on Saturday and catch some traditional Pipe band music, courtesy of the Stromness RBL Pipe Band and the Kirkwall City Pipe Band. See you there?

Kirkwall City Pipe Band play outside the St Magnus cathedral every 2nd Saturday in the summer & it's a must see for anyone visiting Orkney πŸ˜ƒπŸ’ƒπŸ•ΊπŸ™Œ

A reminder of the importance of not disturbing birds when you are taking photographs. Not only can it lead to nests failing, but for schedule 1 species it is illegal. Schedule 1 species are the birds for which it is an offence to intentionally or recklessly disturb at, on or near an active nest. Schedule 1 birds include red-throated diver, hen harrier, peregrine, little terns and corncrake to name a few. The full list is available here https://www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/advice/wildlife-and-the-law/wildlife-and-countryside-act/schedules/

Long lenses mean it is possible to take photos that may look like the photographer was much closer to nests than was the case, but each year we are contacted about photographers being too near to nests. People may cause disturbance without realising they are doing anything wrong, so we wanted to share some information on why birds and their young are particularly vulnerable to disturbance during breeding season. Please bear the following in mind when you are out enjoying nature in Orkney, whether you are taking photos or just having a walk.

Disturbance can prevent birds from settling, or if already nesting, they will fly away from their nests and neglect their eggs or chicks. Disturbance may result in:
β€’ Birds failing to nest
β€’ Eggs failing to hatch
β€’ Chicks dying from heat, cold or lack of food
β€’ Nests becoming vulnerable to predators
β€’ Birds wasting energy at a time when food may be scarce

How to recognise a distressed or disturbed bird
β€’ They will make a loud repeated alarm call – they don’t sound very happy and they’re not.
β€’ They will approach people much closer than would normally be the case - some birds may even dive bomb you. This is a clear message that the bird feels threatened by your presence and that you should retreat.
β€’ They will feign injury in an attempt to distract you from the nest.
β€’ Subtle behaviour such as circling high above.
What you can do to help
β€’ Wherever possible stick to tracks or paths.
β€’ Keep dogs and birds apart. Birds see dogs as a threat. If you do have a dog with you, keep it under close control (preferably on a lead) at all times.
β€’ Give a wide berth to young birds and to adults that appear distressed. Move away quickly and quietly, this may mean going back the way you have come.
β€’ Do not stop for prolonged periods away from paths. Move on if a bird shows signs of disturbance or distress.
β€’ If you are at a site with a hide, please make sure you use the hide to observe or take photographs of birds. The hide is there for a reason and being in other areas could cause disturbance.

Please remember that intentional or reckless disturbance of Schedule 1 birds, or an action that prevents any bird species from accessing its nest with eggs or young, may constitute a potential wildlife crime. If you witness such an incident please make a note of as much information as possible, including the action of the individual(s) concerned and the response of the birds, and contact Police Scotland on 101.
