"Escape to the enchanting Orkney Islands, a archipelago of 70 islands and skerries off Scotland's northeastern coast, where the windswept landscapes, ancient ruins, and picturesque villages weave a tapestry of wonder and discovery.

Delve into the Neolithic heart of Orkney, where the standing stones of Stenness and the Ring of Brodgar whisper secrets of a bygone era, and the mysterious Maeshowe tomb reveals the ingenuity of the island's earliest inhabitants.

Unravel the mysteries of Skara Brae, a 5,000-year-old village preserved in sand and time, where the remnants of a long-lost civilization await your exploration.

Let the dramatic coastline, sculpted by the relentless North Sea, leave you awestruck, as the crashing waves and salty spray invigorate your senses.

Find solace in the tranquility of the islands' secluded beaches, where seals and seabirds are your only companions, and the soft sand and pebbles crunch beneath your feet.

Immerse yourself in the warm hospitality of the Orcadian people, and indulge in the local culture, from traditional folk music to the finest seafood and handcrafted ales, as the islands' rich heritage comes alive in every moment.

As the Northern Lights dance across the night sky, casting an ethereal glow over the islands, remember that the Orkney Islands are a place where the boundaries between past and present, land and sea, and reality and myth blur.

Come, and let the magic of these islands forever leave its mark on your soul, as you discover the secrets, stories, and landscapes that have captivated travelers for centuries."

💕 Bride and groom passing the 'bride cog', at Orkney 1955.
The bride and groom traditionally go round all the guests at their wedding, and the bride offers each guest some liquid refreshment - a mixture of hot ale, whisky, beaten eggs and sugar - from the cog or large cup. Some cogs had three handles. This may have been so that bride, groom and guest were able to hold a handle each. Some cogs only had two handles, but this example seems to be a three-handled one. The shape of the 'bride cog' is rather similar to the shape of Scandinavian ale vessels. It is made, like a cask, from staves bound together with hoops, and with handles that wing out.

On this day in 1967: The world’s shortest commercial flight route started between two Orkney Islands, Westray and Papa Westray, north of the Scottish mainland. The Loganair flight covers a distance of only 1.7 miles (about the length of the main runway at Edinburgh Airport) and it can be completed in under one minute, on a clear day.
