Paradise Cottage is where I grew up.
It’s a 370 year old (ish) cottage with curvy walls – stone on the ground floor and cob on the first floor. For those of you who don’t know, cob is basically earth or mud – although when we had to rebuild part of the front wall when I was a child, there were also enormous rocks, sheep’s skulls and straw in the mix too.
My parents, Gwenda and Basil Towell, bought it in 1964 at auction, having moved down in ‘63 with their friends Dorothy and Stan Rickwood. The two couples had got to know each other, living on opposite sides of Melody Road in Wandsworth in South West London. Gwenda and Dorothy had worked in motor racing together. While they waited to buy Paradise Cottage – and for Dorothy and Stan, Orchard Cottage, also in the village – they had to live squeezed in together with two houseful’s furniture into a small terrace house opposite where now is Castle Dore rowing club in the village.
