Our postie, James Johnston, took these photos this morning as he walked along the shore to deliver to Dry Island. On a day like this, he must love his job.

No food miles were involved for this lunch in Rose Cottage garden. Delicious, freshly caught langoustines from Dry Island, Scottish Highlands deserved delicious, freshly made mayonnaise. The eggs for the mayo came from our friend who keeps the cottage so clean and well loved for us between guests. The view is available year round.

We all have our favourite beaches. This one is mine. It’s more of a hike to get there, which only matters when you are lugging enough stuff to make a proper day of it. But once there, it is pure magic, with views down to Torridon.

Sheep and cows are part of the scenery in the highlands. They are as likely as not to be loose, and wander past the front of Rose Cottage at will. They have first dibs on road use and their wandering causes regular low-grade traffic jams, placidly ignoring the car horns and shouts of drivers. We once had a distant cousin from Hawaii visit, who had never seen a sheep outside a zoo. She wanted me to stop the car so that she could try chasing one, curious to know whether it would run away or turn around and chase her back. (I didn’t let her.)

When the cottage needs a new peg bag and your sister is a whizz with a sewing machine! How brilliant is this?! It’s actually a peg apron, rather than a bag, and pe***ng out washing is not necessarily how you will choose to spend your time in the highlands. But if you DO get the urge, rest assured you’ll be doing it in style.

Creels and buoys on Badachro Pier. The buoys mark where the chain of creels has been dropped, allowing the fisherman to haul up a catch of lobsters, crabs and langoustines. Badachro fishermen Ian McWhinney from Dry Island offers brilliant Shellfish Safaris, where you join him on his boat for a trip out to pull up his creels, learn about sustainable fishing and natural history, and go home with something delicious for supper. Highly recommended for both adults and children. He’s an authority on the history of the area too - his family has lived and fished here for generations - and these trips are always good fun.

Swipe for the full view. Turn left out of the front of Rose Cottage, leaving the bay behind you, you will soon reach Loch Bad na h-Achlaise. Evening is always a good time for a stroll, to watch the sun dipping down towards the sea at Opinan beyond, catching the loch on its way. Buzzards nest near the shore here too.

Summer in the hills, and fold on fold of ridges as far as the eye can see. This was an amazing hike, taking in two Munros - Sgorr Ruadh and Beinn Liath Mhor. All ages were out there, and it was a good leg stretch for those with two legs, and four. Then home to a comfy cottage and a hearty supper, via a well-earned refreshment stop at ! Can you think of a better way to spend a sunny day in the highlands?

I talk a lot about hillwalking. For us it’s one of the real joys of the highlands. The sense of wilderness, the ability to stretch your eyes around 360, and see little more evidence of mankind than perhaps a thin ribbon of road snaking away in the distance. And you don’t have to be a Munro bagger to experience this rugged beauty. There are many hills that get less attention because they are under 3000ft, but are therefore a little more accessible. This is from Beinn an Eoin, which has a longer but more gentle walk in and then a pull up at the end.

A snowy Badachro from the pier - swipe for the whole panorama. The middle slide shows the , perched right beside the water, perfectly placed to serve thirsty mariners. It is a fantastic pub in any season with stunning views, and just a 7-minute stroll - or perhaps in this case slide - from Rose Cottage.

We have a lot of enjoyable debates about what is the best time of year in the highlands. My view tends to move with the seasons, but I think I can make a good case for winter. Heading out into that stark, wild beauty, gilt-edged by low winter light, the days short but precious, followed by a comfortable sofa, a cosy fire, a cup of tea and slice of gingerbread, and a good book. Just the right combination of physical effort and self nurture.

Happy New Year from Rose Cottage! We’ll be there next month to give the cottage some TLC after an incredibly busy season. There’s something very special about the stillness of the early part of the year, like everything is holding its breath before spring and we’re hoping to get some walking in as well as good works. If you’re planning your own escape for 2024, we’re pretty busy, but there are still weeks here and there up for grabs.

Wishing all our guests, past, present and future, a very Happy Christmas and peaceful and healthy New Year.

Badachro's postman, Jamie Johnson, took these photos today of the bay. Freezing cold but so beautiful. When I asked him if I could use his photos he said 'It is your view!'.

And it could be yours, too, for a week or two.

We could tell you all about the cottage’s cosy charm and comfort. We could go on about the fabulous views over Badachro bay. We could rave about the area’s amazing scenery and the glorious beaches nearby. Or we could just quote our recent guests, “Perfect. Everyone happy.”

A different take on our view, this time putting Rose Cottage into its setting. In the centre of the bay you can see Dry Island, here, at low tide, attached to the mainland. Beyond it is Isle Horrisdale, the island that lies across the mouth of Badachro Bay and shields the boats moored here from the worst of the storms that blow up the Gairloch sea loch.

Meet one of our favourite neighbours, a gentleman who has really upped the Badachro fashion stakes with his jazzy highlights and splendid horns. He also knows exactly how to set himself off against a dramatic backdrop. I expect he has his own Instagram account.

The kitchen, housed in the extension at the back of the cottage, has enjoyed quite a significant makeover this winter. It is a balancing act to ensure the kitchen is as functional and user-friendly as possible - with all the modern facilities that help make holidays relaxed and easy - without losing the character of the cottage that we love. We took the opportunity to audit all the white goods, and replace where necessary with those with the highest energy efficiency ratings.
