Did you knowā€¦?

Pilates is a form of resistance training.

Resistance training is defined as ā€œa form of exercise that improves muscular strength and enduranceā€. When you do resistance training, you use the weight of your body, gravity, bands, and even weights to create resistance for your arms, legs, and torso during a workout. Pilates uses bands and other weighted items of equipment as well as gravity and your body weight to make exercises more focused and effective.

Happy birthday to the founder of Pilates, Joseph Pilates! As he once said, ā€œThe Pilates method teaches you to be in control of your body and not at its mercy." We couldn't agree more with this statement.

Equestrians, can you recognise signs in the saddle that indicate you need to train your lateral subsystem?

Look out for the following:
- Collapsing to the outside in canter (seat slides to the outside of the bend and a shortening of the inside waist and lowering of the shoulder)
- Seatbones donā€™t feel evenly weighted
- One leg feels easier to move
- One leg feels stronger
- One leg looks longer
- More wear on one glove and the opposite boot
- Your horse moves more freely and turns easier in one directions than the other

An imbalance in your oblique slings is common and will not be rectified through more riding alone. Working on your own ā€˜flatworkā€™ is the best route to creating positive change in your ability to communicate more effectively with your horse through your seat.

Join one of our Pilates for Equestrians today to feel the benefits for yourself.

Whether you practice Pilates in person or online with your instructor, or practice alone or in a group, it is all about what your put into your practice. You only get out what you put in as they say. Simply showing up does not mean you will feel the benefits.

You need to focus (for up to an hour only) and put in maximum effort. That can only come from you.

What I promise to give you as an instructor is 100% support, encouragement, motivation and years of expertise. The rest is on you.

You donā€™t know what your body can do until you put in 100% effort. Mindset is everything.

Did you knowā€¦?

Joseph Pilates created Pilates for the rehabilitation of war soldiers.

Joseph Pilates was always interested in alternative physical exercises due to suffering illnesses and asthma throughout his childhood. As he entered adulthood, he had a special interest in physical training. When he was detained in an internment camp on the Isle of Man called Knockaloe, he developed what is now known as Pilates. This was to help soldiers returning from WWI recover and rehabilitate from their injuries.

Ten Amazing Facts About the Spine

The spine is an amazing part of the human body. Here are just ten fascinating facts about the spine.
- The spine has over 120 muscles in it. This is why our spine is so flexible, and why it allows us to use it in so many different ways.
- Cartilage in the spine can expand and contract. Gravity can cause the cartilage to expand and contract, that is why sometimes when people go to space they come back taller!
- You are also taller in the morning than at night, because at night you have had gravity pushing down on you all day long.
- The spine has an exceptional memory. Your spine will remember and become used to your posture. This is why it can be hard to get out of the habit of having bad posture. But once you do make a habit of good posture, your spine will remember it.
- Approximately 80% of people will suffer from back pain in their life. Back pain is the number one reason that people miss work.
- Humans and giraffes have the same amount of vertebrae in their neck. This is what provides humans with so much flexibility in their neck.
- Babiesā€™ spines begin developing just two months after conception.
- The spine is very strong. It can hold hundreds of kilograms of weight.
- Most of the back pain experienced is in the lower back. This is because the lower back is constantly twisting and stretching.
- The spine is extremely flexible. It can bend far enough back to make ā…” of a circle.

The spine is truly amazing! Because it is so amazing we need to make sure we really take care of it. Regular Pilates sessions is one of the best ways to look after your spine. So what are you waiting for, join Vita Sana Pilates today!

Did you knowā€¦?

The creator of Pilates also called it ā€œContrologyā€.

When Joseph Pilates created Pilates, he originally referred to it as ā€œContrologyā€. This was because the exercises all focus on dedicated control of certain muscle groups.
