With its quaint pastel-coloured houses, splendid Victorian architecture and unspoilt charm, the picturesque harbour town of Ilfracombe is fast becoming a haven for culture vultures and foodies, as well as the usual surf seekers. A popular seaside resort during the Victorian era, today the vibrant town brims with quirky independent shops, galleries, restaurants and cafes. Nestled on the dramatic North Devon coastline and surrounded by towering cliffs, the area provides breathtaking coastal scenery for walkers and cyclists, with direct access to the stunning South West Coast Path and Tarka Trail. A 3-minute walk from the apartment will take you to the town’s bustling high street and historic Fore Street, with its 14th century tavern and Michelin starred restaurant. Walk 2 minutes further down Fore Street and you will find yourself in the pretty working harbour where you can sample some freshly caught seafood and delicious ice-cream while Damien Hirst’s 66ft bronze statue Verity stands guard on the quayside. Visit the 14th century chapel perched above the harbour, which houses England’s oldest working lighthouse. Trips to Lundy Island, coastal cruises, fishing, sea-life safaris and diving are all available – if you’re lucky you might spot seals, porpoises or even dolphins popping up to say hello. Beachgoers are spoilt for choice with Ilfracombe’s sandy bays and hidden coves, including the historic Tunnels Beaches, accessed by tunnels dug through the cliffs in Victorian times. A popular wedding venue, the Tunnels are under ten minutes’ walk from the apartment, making Little Rock an ideal crash pad for wedding guests. Hire kayaks or SUPs at Combe Martin beach. For wide stretches of golden sand and crashing surf, Saunton, Croyde and Woolacombe - voted 6th best beach in Europe by Tripadvisor - are all within 20-30 minutes’ drive. Picture-perfect fishing village Clovelly (Britain's Most Instagrammable Village 2020), the Lynton to Lynmouth Cliff Railway, and enchanting Appledore with its winding streets of colourful fishermen’s cottages, are among a host of attractions within easy driving distance, making Ilfracombe the perfect location from which to explore North Devon and Exmoor.
