Wildlife Croft Skye

Wildlife Croft Skye 3.8 ha wildlife-rich croft in Skye

Productive woodland, orchard, polytunnel, veg beds, ducks & hens
(13)

We live on this beautiful croft in South Skye where we try to leave lots of space for wildlife as well as grow food. It's a constant juggling act and we are learning all the time. We are passionate about wildlife, regenerative agriculture and this amazing community we live in. We welcome guests to stay here on the croft in our hidden away self-catering, Stonechat Bothy.

🐞 We’ve had some really exciting wildlife firsts this month! A male Black Grouse dropped in one Sunday afternoon, there’s been a Water Shrew, and this cool looking Spiked Shieldbug.

🐝 We’ve been quiet on Facebook recently, but we’ve both been keeping busy with lots of projects, including sprucing up Stonechat Bothy, making willow baskets, and growing native trees and fruit trees to sell.

🌳 You can follow Phils tree business (Drumfearn Trees) and my basket making journey over on instagram.

🌄 We’ve also set up an instagram account just for Stonechat Bothy too!

🍏 Food has taken a bit of a back seat lately, but we did make a wee batch of apple and quince chutney, and a really delicious medlar crumble! We’ve a good supply of jam and potatoes to keep us going, and chard, kale and spring onions happily growing.

We have a few spaces available on our weekly veg box scheme. If you're interested in organic veg grown on the Isle of Skye then please get in touch (at email address [email protected]) and we'll send you more details

We have 3 collection points where we drop our boxes and customers come and collect from. If you were to sign up with us today you're first box would be:
Roag (nr Dunvegan) - Tuesday 18th July
Broadford - Friday 21st July
Portree - Friday 22st July.. and then weekly thereafter

We're now in the full swing of harvest with more crops coming ready each week. Our boxes have 6-8 portions each week, depending on what's in season. And since everything is so fresh it keeps really well and is full of goodness - skye soil in an edible form! What's not to enjoy.

Please get in touch with any questions

🍏🧺🦋 Did you know 🍏🧺🦋

Behind Stonechat Bothy there is a secluded orchard complete with a picnic bench for our guests to use and enjoy during their stay. It’s full of wildflowers and butterflies and birdsong.

You won’t see any people, vehicles, houses, or streetlights from here. You’ll be completely immersed in the natural world 🌳 ⛅️

We had a really fun adventure with these amazing people earlier this week, and will be going again as soon as we can🤞🏻🤞🏻

The Croft is full of orchids at the moment, the Garden Warbler is still here singing it’s heart out and there are loads of Golden-ringed dragonflies busy hunting. The sun has been shining and it’s been really warm for weeks now ☀️

The Croft is at its best and we have availability at Stonechat Bothy from Saturday this week if you fancy escaping to Skye for a few days 😃

Singing it’s wee heart out all day looking for a female ❤️

Just arrived here from Central Africa and thinks this place has everything it needs to raise some young 👍🏻 (lots of invertebrates!)

We’re enjoying using the Merlin app and recommend it for identifying by sound

☀️ What a beautiful weekend it’s been.

🐦 We’ve seen a pair of Bullfinches, a pair of Stonechats, a Heron land by our pond, and our first Willow Warbler of the year. We’ve heard Redpolls overhead all weekend, and there’s a pair of Long-tailed t**s nesting very close to our house.

🌱 We are busy sowing now that it feels like spring might be here to stay 😬 and the moth trap had its first outing in a while.

🐣 Happy Easter to all our followers. Hope the weather is nice where you are too.

Wildlife Croft Skye

A 3.8 hectare croft in South Skye planted with native woodland almost 15 years ago. Our aims are to grow food and firewood and improve the habitat for native wildlife. We have a one bedroom self catering cottage, Stonechat Bothy. See www.wildlifecroftskye.co.uk for our availability, blogs, photo gallery and more.
