The Carriage is a converted freight train carriage that was built in 1908. When Keswick train station closed many carriages were sold off and this one arrived in Stonethwaite?? It's taken a lot of work to make it the cosy hideaway it is today but it really has been a labour of love. We wouldn't want any guests to stay somewhere that we would love ourselves.
Stonethwaite is set on the Cumbrian Way, with 14 Wainwright walks starting from the village, including those in the Langstrath Valley and Buttermere. Whether you're a seasoned explorer or a budding adventurer - there are walks for all abilities. However, if you want to relax and just take in the views there some great pubs and tea rooms, serving local beers & gorgeous food including; The Langstrath Inn - Stonethwaite & The Riverside Bar - Rosthwaite.
You can bring your dog, although more than one may be a bit of a squeeze in the Carriage.
Please note, as this is a glamping experience there is NO running water (and the loo doesn’t have a sink) or electricity but there will be bottled water, which I am more than willing to top up from the cottage. There are fairy lights and candles in the carriage but you might want to bring head torches if you want a brighter light. Although there is no shower; hot water, soap and fresh towels can be provided on request.
Being off grid allows you to really get away from the hustle and bustle and recharge in the mountains. However this also means there is no mobile signal. But its only a short walk to get a signal if you require it. Phones can be charged from our cottage and of course you can use our landline if you need to contact loved ones to let them know you’ve arrived.
