Moved the cattle into new pasture this evening.

By grazing small areas at a time, each area has plenty of rest between visits, giving slower growing grasses and wildflowers time to grow.

We've finally got a pond. Back in June we had a pond dug in the wettest area of our meadow. For the last 3 months we've had a muddy hole in the ground. Great to see it full of water now the rains are back.

Over the summer we've already seen a huge number of dragonflies and mayflies, and the swallows loved it for catching bugs.

Meanwhile the cows have been enjoying the hawthorn, and Clifford's been dressing up in burrs.

Day 3: Learning to run.

So our very first calf arrived at 8.45 this morning, right on schedule. He's a beautiful dun (brown) bull calf.
He was up and about within 20 mins of being born, but couldn't find Hetty's milk. He got the right area, but couldn't home in on Hetty's teats.
He eventually succeeded this afternoon, and again this evening, but it takes one us to put the teat in his mouth. 🙄. I'm sure he'll get the hang of it soon.

Lovely weather for the Easter holidays. We have had 3 lovely families in a row staying in the camping barn over the holidays, enjoying lots of sunshine.

They have all been impressively active, with multiple ascents of Catbells, walks up other local hills and around the lake, ascents of Scafell, and paddleboarding on Derwentwater.

Here are the goose eggs Jamie & Nicola's girls decorated beautifully for Easter day, and some of the hills that have been climbed behind Hetty.
