Just down the road from no 51. A beautiful nature reserve which also hosts Conwy parkrun every Saturday morning at 9am

🪶RSPB Conwy Nature Reserve, North Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

This area was previously an expanse of mud on the outside of a large bend in the Conwy estuary. It provided excellent feeding for wading birds with each receding tide.

In the late 1980’s, during construction of the A*5 tunnel, 3.5 million cubic metres of dredged sediment was pumped onto this area. The original plan was to plant grass over the newly formed landmass, but instead the area was landscaped to form lagoons, compensating for the loss of natural habitat.

The project was guided by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, and was officially opened to the public on 14th April 1995. Today, over 220 species of bird have been recorded on the reserve, along with 273 plant species.

🌉 The Bridges of Conwy, North Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Prior to the modern road bridge, completed in 1958, Telford’s suspension bridge (1826) and Stephenson’s tubular rail bridge (1849) were all that spanned the Afon Conwy.

Following safety inspections of Telford’s bridge around 1900, which itself was subsequently strengthened and given an additional cantilevered walkway on the seaward side (now removed), a suspension footbridge was also constructed between Telford’s and Stephenson’s bridges. This second suspension bridge was in existence until the late 1950’s, and was then dismantled. All that exists today are two platforms at each end, serving as viewpoints.
