Aurora at our very own historic building - Ardvreck under the dancers.

It is only in the last century and a bit that we have known these lights in the sky are a result of solar activity, so imagine going back in time to when the castle was at it's prime seeing the sky come alive at night with dancing lights.

A portent of doom? a message from the ancestors? the thin veil between this life and the next being pulled apart by ghosts scrambling to get back to their families?

Archaeology is often filled with talk of rituals in times gone by, and when taking this photo I was laughing to myself thinking about those rituals and how they have been replaced by dozens of us grabbing our cameras and running out to make sure and share an image of the dancing lights. Ritual? You bet it is.

There's been a lot of activity in Lochinver bay this last week with huge shoals of sprats, herring and mackerel providing some serious feeding for seals, seabirds, otters and even dolphins (long time since I've seen them in the harbour area).

I was stopped in the village by David MacPhail asking when was the last time fish have been caught in the carraidh (fish trap) in the village. I though it was in the 1960's but David reckoned he might be able to update the record books and dissappeared off with his waders and a landing net.

Only a few minutes later, he stopped to let me know the landing net broke under the weight of fish as he scooped out a bumper haul (in the image)

Perhps for the first time in decades the fish trap working as it was intended - now that is history being made!
