The Archeological Museum in Naples is not just full of statues of naked ladies, and in fact the Farnese collection includes one of the worlds most famous and influential representations of the hero Hercules, shown after his defeat of the fabled Nemean Lion.
Again a Roman copy of a Greek bronze, this was made for the Baths of Caracalla in Rome in 216 AD, where it was discovered in 1546. The original dated from circa 300 BC and is thought to have survived until it was melted down by Crusaders in 1205 during the Sack of Constantinople.

One of the highlights of the Naples Archeological Museum is downstairs in an unheralded anteroom. This magnificent Roman statue is the Venus Callipyge. For those whose Greek is not what it could be, that’s roughly "Venus of the beautiful buttocks" in translation…
She may have beautiful buttocks, but there’s a lot more to her than that!
It is of Roman origin, though believed to be a copy of an even older Greek sculpture which no longer survives. And during the 2,000 years of its existence it has been much copied, imitated and written about, in part due to that provocative pose.
It formed a part of one of the earliest and most important Greco-Roman art collections, established by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, who became Pope Paul III (1534 - 1549), and ended up in Naples in 1787, thanks to the wonderfully-named Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies.. (and you thought there was only one Sicily?)
