Destroyed in 1808 to provide material for a lookout/telegraph tower that was intended to provide a warning in case of a French invasion during the Napoleonic wars, the original watchtower was located on Nags Head. That Napoleonic watchtower was built nearby and is today a stone ruin.
These two promontory forts lend their name to one of the most popular tourist destinations in Ireland, they are known as Mothar's or Moher's.
