Kenya is renowned for its wide-open spaces and golden beaches, but it is best known for some of the most dramatic wildlife viewing in Africa, including the annual migration of two million wildebeest into the Masai Mara. Here are our top things to do on a Kenya adventure:

🐘 Go hot-air ballooning for a bird's-eye view of the Masai Mara
🐘 Admire flocks of flamingos in Lake Nakuru
🐘 Witness the Great Migration
🐘 Visit Kenya's palm-lined beaches and take a traditional dhow sail-boat cruise

Still associated with old tales of Transylvanian vampires, Romania has so much more to offer the discerning traveller than folklore. Here, the Carpathian Mountains provide a breath-taking backdrop for your journey. Amidst these peaks lie sprawling forests, Saxon churches, fantastical castles and tucked-away villages where long-held traditions beguile. It’s a romantic setting for an outdoor adventure.

Looking for new discoveries? Even the most seasoned traveller will find surprises in Asia’s far east. In China, you can see the black-eyed pandas of Chengdu, the stone-still battalions of the Terracotta Army, and the 21,000-kilometre Great Wall. Or choose Japan to revel in neon-lit Tokyo then retreat to the hot springs, traditional inns and alpine trails. Then there is South-east Asia, a region of limestone karsts, gilded bays, jungle temples and sizzling street food.

Seeing the majestic Bengal tiger in its natural habitat is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in India. We recommend combining a tiger-spotting safari in Ranthambore with a tour of India's Golden Triangle and its iconic sights.

Whether you’re drawn to the iconic sights, bright lights and famous bites, or curious to experience more understated attractions: Japan delivers. Tokyo’s hyper-modern cityscape, a vast tapestry of distinctive neighbourhoods, is destined to dazzle. Meanwhile, Kyoto offers a tempting contrast, with its ancient temples and cherished traditions. But much of the country warrants exploring beyond these two famous cities, not least the tropical southern islands.

The ‘Land of the Pharaohs’ is a perennial favourite for good reason. Its ancient archaeological sites are world-class, its cities – including the famous capital, Cairo – are as energetic as they are atmospheric, and there really is nothing quite like cruising between temples on the fabled Nile (especially aboard a romantic felucca).

Our top tip: visit in late October to precede the peak tourist season while avoiding the severe heat of summer.

Few are unfamiliar with Italy’s appeal as a holiday destination – it's one of the most visited countries in the world, after all. This Mediterranean nation is a cultural mecca thanks to its Renaissance masterpieces, ancient Roman ruins and tantalising cuisine. Every region has its own character, with distinctive traditions, delicacies, landscapes and dialects. Beyond Italy’s vibrant cities lie secluded medieval hamlets, idyllic coastal towns, soaring mountains and rolling countryside.

Sri Lanka is home to a wide array of wonders, both man-made and natural. Here are our top five things to see and do:

📍 The Sigiriya rock fortress: Sigiriya – or ‘Lion Rock’ – is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that juts dramatically out of the forests of central Sri Lanka. In addition to ascending the cliff-side staircase to see the ruins, we recommend exploring the wider area.

📍 Nuwara Eliya and surrounding tea country: A bucolic region of rolling hills carpeted with tea leaves. The scenery is gorgeously green and studded with bungalows, hotels and gardens.

📍 Some of the best beaches in the world: On Sri Lanka’s east coast, you can unwind on a series of inviting white-sand beaches. Meanwhile, the south coast shelters little pockets of untouched golden sand and wild waves. Then there is the west coast, with its huge swathes of open sandy shore.

📍 The train from Kandy to Ella: The meandering rail route from Kandy to Ella is rewardingly scenic, and best enjoyed aboard either Sri Lanka’s famous blue trains or the newer Ella Odyssey train.

📍 The wildlife of Sri Lanka: Leopards, sloth bears, and a dazzling number of endemic birds call Sri Lanka home.

A land of desert landscapes, otherworldly palaces and imposing forts, Rajasthan is one of India's most fascinating states. Its long and interesting history has left it peppered with pretty buildings and dramatic old military sites that are not only to be admired in terms of aesthetics, but also for the stories they tell.

Here are some of the finest structures in Rajasthan:

📍 Hawa Mahal, Jaipur
📍 City Palace, Jaipur
📍 Amber Fort, Jaipur
📍 Rampuria Havelis, Bikaner

With its glorious temples and traces of forgotten trading empires, the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu has much to engage the culture-seeking traveller. A journey along its Coromandel Coast between the historic cities of Chennai and Puducherry makes a stimulating contrast to the beach life of neighbouring Kerala, argues Caroline Eden, but still has that languid south Indian pace of life.

India: one of the six cradles of human civilisation, and as varied as it is vast. In this country of a billion people, cities sizzling with spice and chatter give way to serene hill stations and exquisite temples. Sun-beaten forests shelter all stripes of animal, including prowling Bengal tigers and tramping Indian elephants.

With so much to see and do, it’s easy to feel bewildered. We share our top 10 things to do in India, to give you a starting point for your perfect India holiday: https://bit.ly/10-best-things-to-do-India

From the cloud-skimming peaks of the Atlas mountains to the alluring Atlantic coast: Morocco is North Africa at its most geographically diverse. That’s without mentioning the country’s myriad cultural attractions, including its famous medinas, buzzing souks, old ports and traditional Berber settlements. All this contributes to Morocco’s enduring appeal as a holiday destination.

The country is best appreciated during the liminal seasons of spring and autumn. If you wish to hike up the spectacular Atlas mountains, or visit the attractive coast, October is ideal, offering pleasant temperatures after the high heat of summer and before the chill of winter.

Colombia is a picture of handsome buildings, lively metropolises, mist-shrouded mountains, lush coffee country and gilded coastline. Close to the equator, the country is consistently warm through the year, including our autumn months. In November, the Caribbean and Andean regions are drier than the Amazon and Pacific regions, making it an excellent time to visit the walled coastal city of Cartagena, replete with colourful, cobbled streets. The occasional shower shouldn’t dissuade you from walking in the lush plantations of the Coffee Triangle, either, where you can learn about the production process from bean to cup.

Some regions lend themselves perfectly to a multi-destination odyssey. South America is colourful, complex and beautiful – just like the manta shawls that adorn Peru’s Quechua women – and you can hop borders to trace the influence of pre-Columbian kingdoms, or admire nature at its most spectacular.
