A piece of history on the Tyne Bridge 📸 An inscription of Middlesbrough-based Dorman, Long and Co., who famously constructed the bridge, has been blasted and primed ready for painting.

The inscription is located under the deck within the scaffold adjacent to the Gateshead Tower. The first section of the bridge has been grit blasted and the team are now working across 12 floors of scaffolding to repair and prime the steel before it can be painted.

Elsewhere on the restoration project, within the bridge deck void which is accessed via the east footpath, 9 tonne of pigeon guano has been removed and 8 hangers have been grit blasted to allow structural repairs to commence.

Thanks to Newcastle City Council for this update on the progress of Tyne Bridge restoration.

Joseph Wilson Swan (1828-1914), inventor, chemist, physicist and electrical engineer. Most famous for inventing the incandescent light, as well as fairy lights, photographic paper, synthetic silk and a miner’s flameless safety light.

Born 1828 in Pallion Hall, Sunderland. In 1846 Joseph Swan joined his friend John Mawson in his chemist business. In 1867 Mawson was killed in an explosion on the Town Moor in Newcastle while trying to dispose of Nitro-glycerinein. That same year Swan’s wife and twin sons also died. After a year he moved the family to Underhill House in Kells Lane, Gateshead. In1869 Mawson and Swan extended to include stationary, under the management of Thomas Morgan. New premises were taken in Grey Street which became ‘Mawson, Swan and Morgan’ (now Byron Burgers). The original electric street lamps are still outside this building.

In 1879 Joseph Swan demonstrated his incandescent light to 700 people at the Lit & Phil. In 1879 the Mawson and Swan business premises on Mosley Street and the street itself were the first in the world to be illuminated with electric light. In 1880 Swan supervised the installation of his electric light at Sir William Armstrong’s mansion at Cragside.

Thomas Edison was also working on an incandescent lamp. In 1880 he produced a lamp using a bamboo filament and received a U.S. patent for an exact copy of Swan’s Light. Edison attempted to sue Joseph Swan for infringement of patent. Eventually they formed the Edison and Swan United Electric Light Company Limited [EdiSwan].

Sir Joseph Swan was born into a world of candles and left the world a more illuminated place. He died in 1914 at the age of 86.

Great photo of the Turnbull Building, taken by Martin Oliver of the Newcastle Upon Tyne Buildings & Architects FB Page.

What is now known as 'The Turnbull', located on Queen's Lane in Newcastle, was built in 1888 By F. W. Rich for Robert Robinson and Co., a stationery wholesaler and printers. A south block was added in 1897 and a tower in 1898. It was built on land that had once belonged to a medieval Carmelite monastery, which stood just inside the Town Wall, between Clavering Place and the Long Stairs. In 1961 the building was acquired by E. & F. Turnbull Ltd and used as a warehouse, sharing it with Peacocks' Surgical & Medical Equipment Ltd. The company name was displayed on the building, which is a prominent feature on the Newcastle skyline, opposite the Castle Keep. As such, it was widely known as 'Turnbull's Warehouse', it was used as a warehouse up to the late 1990s. In 2001, the building was converted into 48 Manhattan-style loft and penthouse apartments. During this redevelopment, pottery and other artifacts dating as far back as the 12th century were uncovered. The Turnbull is a Grade II listed building on the National Heritage List for England.

Gibson Street Baths.. The building was constructed in 1906 by FH Holford as a public swimming pool and wash house and opened in 1907. The baths had separate men's and women's entrances and the building is notable for its ornate tiles and glazed, domed roof. It was one of the earliest public swimming baths in Britain.
The swimming pool is hidden beneath floorboards in the 5,220 sq ft main hall, which is capped by a glazed, domed ceiling.
The building had been used by a badminton club that laid courts over the former pool but closed its doors in the 90s never to re-open.

View of one corner of the three-cornered Central Exchange Buildings, taken by Martin Oliver of the Newcastle upon Tyne Buildings & Architects FB Page.

The Central Exchange is a triangular building, designed by John Wardle and George Walker and built by Richard Grainger as part of the redevelopment of Newcastle city centre. The building was completed c1838 initially intended to be a corn exchange, but soon became a subscription news room (see picture of the news room c1860). In 1870 the Institution for Promoting the Fine Arts converted the news room into an art gallery, concert hall and theatre. The interior of the building was badly damaged by fires in 1867 and 1901. Much of the interior was replaced by the Central Arcade which opened in 1906. The Central Exchange Buildings are Grade II* listed on the National Heritage List for England.
