Behind the scenes at Kivuli Trust – Aardvark Safaris affiliated charity
The work going on in the physiotherapy room at Kivuli Trust is exceptional. Peter has the rewarding role of working closely with the children of Gilgil school to strengthen and rehabilitate movement back into their lives. Through his dedication, time, and patience he has witnessed incredible journeys and aided in the transition of many children’s progress from wheelchairs to walking with the support of a frame. These two girls were once only able to move around in wheelchairs but now thanks to the work of Peter and the team they are both walking independently with walking frames. Exciting news from Rwanda’s Akagera National Park
Five eastern black rhinos have returned to Africa in one of the largest Europe-to-Africa translocation efforts, led by . This marks a major conservation milestone, as the European Association of Zoos, the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks work together to increase genetic diversity and restore critically endangered species to the region. Just 12 years ago, rhinos were declared extinct in Rwanda, but now visitors can witness the incredible sight of these majestic creatures thriving in their natural habitat.

Paws for effect

Leopards are excellent climbers with many adaptations to be experts at scrambling up trees to scout out potential meals and rest away from pesky scavengers. Their paws in particular have specialised ankle bones that can rotate 180 degrees and allow them to climb headfirst down trees.

We love it when our clients send us photos from their time on safari, these incredible snaps of the elusive leopard were caught on camera by our client Kevin during his stay at Chitwa Chitwa Lodge.

A family safari - children stay free
A family safari in Africa is one of the most exciting and eye-opening experiences a child can have. It broadens children’s horizons and fosters a love for nature. Book a safari in Botswana, Zimbabwe, or Zambia over half-term, Easter or summer holidays, and children under 15 will stay for free. Glide through the waterways of the Okavango Delta spotting hippos and elephants in a mokoro, visit the mighty and magical Victoria Falls, and learn from expert guides on a walking safari in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park. Jo has crafted this fabulous 10-day family itinerary as an example of what you can experience on a safari in these destinations and can tailor this to your family's interests, desires and needs. Meet Koos a legendary riding guide from Ant’s Africa.
Over his guiding career, Koos has witnessed many incredible sightings, but his absolute favourite was spotting an aardwolf in an open field during a wildlife drive with guests. The setting sun made everything look otherworldly, a moment he describes as magical. With 19 years of experience working with horses, Koos is deeply passionate about them. What he enjoys most about his job is taking on challenging horses and transforming them into exceptional safari companions for guests. He takes great care of them and loves sharing their unique personalities with all the guests on safari. Lucinda shares some insights about these legendary guides in this latest blog.

The best place to see whales in South Africa
Hermanus in South Africa is the best place to spot whales, in particular the southern right whale. They migrate from Antarctica to calve in the warmer waters around Hermanus, making them easy to spot even from land. Birkenhead House offers one of the best vantage points to watch these gentle giants breaching from the shores. Jo has designed this seven day itinerary that combines a stay here with four nights at Cape Town’s bustling harbourfront.

We are delighted to welcome Sophie and Madeleine to the Aardvark Safaris team this week.

Sophie’s love for Africa began during her time as a back-up guide at Wait A Little Horse Safaris. With over eight years of experience in the African travel industry, she has developed extensive expertise in eastern and southern Africa. Most recently, she spent two months living in Lolldaiga Hills as an artist in residence before joining our team.

Madeleine has always had a keen interest in the natural world having volunteered with wildlife in Namibia and South Africa’s Eastern Cape, before studying zoology at the University of Reading. In 2023 she gained her guide qualifications in South Africa and worked in a lodge in the Greater Kruger. Now back in the UK she hopes to share her passion for safari and African culture with even more people.

Delight in the curious antics of chimpanzees
Close encounters with chimps is a thrilling experience as Jo discovered on her trip to western Tanzania. The idyllic retreat of Greystoke Mahale on the shores of Lake Tanganyika was the perfect base to adventure into the thick densely forested Mahale Mountains where a thriving population of chimps call home. After feeling like she’d stepped straight out of a David Attenborough documentary, Jo shares her journey to this remote corner of Tanzania and her encounters with these incredible primates. Front-row seats to one of nature's greatest shows
These incredible photos of the Great Wildebeest Migration were taken by when she travelled to Tanzania with us back in 2017. The thundering of hooves, great clouds of dust, panic and confusion as the wildebeest desperately try to navigate the perilous river crossings have been beautifully captured by Kay in these images, bringing this extraordinary spectacle to life for all to enjoy.

August through to October is an excellent time to witness this. Ask our safari experts about the best places to stay during this time. Follow the link below for more information.

Wild dog return to Liwonde National Park
In April 2024, seven African wild dogs were released into the park as part of a reintroduction programme, and we are pleased to announce that they have adapted well to the Liwonde wilderness. Africa Parks – a non-profit conservation organisation has been the driving force behind the rehabilitation of wildlife in Malawi and in particular Majete National Park which now has a thriving animal population and plentiful birdlife. Reintroduction programs, such as this play a crucial role in enhancing biodiversity by restoring the natural balance of ecosystems and contributing to the overall health of the environment. While the numbers of wild dog are dwindling around Africa, the partnership between tourism and conservation provides hope for their succession.

An African adventure for the whole family
The Robinsons have just returned from an incredible holiday to Kenya. Working with travel expert Jo, their wish was to combine their daughter's love for horse riding with an epic African safari that would suit the abilities and interests of the whole family. This was as much a holiday for the riders as the non-riders, and from this feedback we think Jo got it spot on.

You can view the Robinsons family itinerary using the link below. https://bit.ly/familysafaristokenya
