Derek Carruthers (1935-2021): The Studio Sale
A well-known abstract and constructivist artist, Derek Carruthers was early influenced by Pasmore, who he was taught under. He began using lay figures as symbols and metaphors to parallel aspects of the human condition; the sexless, ageless figures held endless possibilities for his compositions.
His constructivist art was shown in many mixed shows and solo exhibitions.
Auction date: 16th August, 10am
Viewing: Monday 14th, 10am-4pm, Tuesday 15th, 9am-4pm, Wednesday 16th, 9-10am

Roullet and Decamp quirky Rabbit-in-a-Cabbage automaton
Roullet & Decamps was a French toy manufacturing company who specialised in the production of automata.
Established in 1866, Jean Roullet opened a small workshop in Paris from where he would produce mechanical toys. One inventor soon approached Roullet with the designs of an automaton of a gardener carrying a cart; it was this mechanism that was later used in their creation of other automata.
In 1879 Roullet's daughter, Henriette, married the workshop's mechanical engineer Ernest Dekamp and following the great success at the Paris Exhibition in 1889 the family firm was renamed.
This Rabbit-in-a-Cabbage automaton, c1890, is a wonderful, quirky example of the company's craftsmanship and is due to be offered for auction in our three-day Fine Art, Antiques & Collectors Sale 14-16 December (lot 1259)
