At the end of this winter season, this Tiger stove was showing some signs of the work its being doing, keeping the house and family snug and cosy. I stripped it down, gave it a good clean, and power swept the flue. Then reassembled it with a set of new firebricks as well as a new throat plate. Now it's as good as new.

I swept this very elegant stove this morning. With the temperature only 3 degrees outside and feeling much colder, it wouldn't surprise me if it was lit again before I'd got my van off the drive.

I swept this Parkray roomheater this morning. I'm a big fan of these. They were the appliance of choice for local authorities for many years. Unsurprisingly really, they are amazingly reliable and durable with spares relatively cheap and easy to obtain. I took it apart, cleaned out all the ash and cinders from the nooks and crannies before reassembling it. It will happily give another years service now.

You don't see so many of these about these days. This overnight burner has given many years of good service and being in good order will continue to give many more. It's a great, simple design, with very little to go wrong. The chimney was certainly ready for sweeping but now it's all set for the winter.

I was asked to call round to look at this rather nice looking fireplace today. The problem is smoke is getting into the bedroom above. "It was a real pea souper" was how the owner described it. The flue is obviously leaking and it will need to be re-lined. Not merely wanting a temporary fix the owner has, at my suggestion, chosen to use sectional concrete liners. This is the product a builder would use when building a new house. In fact it is the only product that is permitted for use in new build properties by the building control department of the local authority. Going forward he can reasonably expect it to last the life of the building. To my mind a sensibly reliable solution to the problem, with a genuinely realistic lifespan. It will involve a little more work and so cost a bit more, but it will see him out.
Unfortunately that is not the only problem with this installation. The opening is too large. It's a common mistake to make A nice fire surround is chosen, quite often the supplier is only too happy to sell it to you without enquiring to its suitability. After forking out a lot of money to have it installed and admiring the pleasing effect, the fire is lit for the first time and smoke, instead of going up the chimney, spills out the top of the fireplace filling the room. We can fix it but I'm afraid it is going to mean some fairly radical alteration and finding an aesthetically pleasing solution may not be easy.
Still, all in a days work.

I have recently relocated to Pen*stone after 18 years sweeping, maintaining, repairing and building chimneys in and around Lincolnshire. It's an occupation I have greatly enjoyed, each day bringing me into contact with a diverse range of customers. Some new, with new stories and many regular old favourites.

A New Brush Sweeps Clean.

Power sweeping is a far more effective and thorough way to clean chimneys than the old manual method of brushes that was in universal use when I started out.
But power sweeping doesn't always deal with old fashioned problems like Birds nests quite so well, which is why I always keep a set of traditional rods and a selection of brushes on the van.

A Clean Sweep.

The first question I am often asked is, "Will there be any mess?"
Nobody wants to spend hours cleaning up after the sweep.
Clean, white calico sheets are placed over the carpet in front of the fireplace. The appliance is sealed to ensure no soot escapes during the sweeping and a powerful industrial vacuum is used to clean it out when It's finished.
