Love at first sight?
Our SKYEFARI guests are usually quite taken with the SKYEFARI 4x4 minibus, as are many passers-by on the road judging by the waves and thumbs-up we get. Louisa here couldn't resist a photo while the rest of us were looking out for eagles and otters nearby.

We do continue running our day tours over the winter but with less availability than during there summer depending on our guide's schedule elsewhere. So if you are interested please do give us as much notice as you can so we can see if our schedules align and if they do you have great chances of spotting our 'Skye Five' of both eagle species, red deer, otters and seals, all of which live here all year long on Skye.

Sometimes the locals are quite curious about what we are doing on 'their' patch!

Sheep and cattle, including of course the famous Highland cows, are something we come across quite regularly of course and they have their own character to add to the landscape of Skye. It sometimes surprises our visitors from overseas and the cities to find sheep wandering loose around the hills and back roads like these ones were. 🐑

The raven is the largest member of the crow species and you may often see them in profile or silhouette like this perched high on a hill or rocky crag. They like to frequent similar areas to the eagles and we have watched them hop around a perched white-tailed eagle in the past, trying to get a reaction from it and persuade it to move on presumably. Their raucous call is quite different to their smaller crow cousins and along with their size as well, you will quite easily spot the difference once our SKYEFARI guide has pointed them out to you.

Butterfly season has started in earnest now with the sunnier days finally arriving. You need your wits about you to spot some of them like this orange-tip whose mottled underwing camouflages them brilliantly against the greenery. Approach slowly and carefully with your camera and you will be able to get some great photos.

For those of you who may be new followers of SKYEFARI (thank you!), we will go back to the basics today and explain what we do.

We offer wildlife-watching day trips around the Isle of Skye with our expert ecologist guides, searching for the best wildlife we can find on the day for you. We have our special locations of course, but you never know what might appear along the road or track at any moment.

We use our specially converted 4x4 Mercedes Sprinter minibus which can carry up to 8 guests on private tours, but with a sliding pricing scale, we can work anywhere from a one-to-one basis with individuals up to the full group of 8, but actually find that couples are our main business each season.

Our main targets are what we call the "Skye Five". These are the five iconic Scottish wildlife species that call Skye home all year round and are the golden and white-tailed eagles, otters, red deer and seals (common and greys).

Of course there are plenty of other species you might see on the day as well which could include hen harriers, short-eared owls, and even whales, dolphins or porpoise from some of our shore locations that we visit.

We work with SWAROVSKI OPTIK Outdoor and you will be able to look through their top-class binoculars and a spotting scope on the day to really see the difference they can make. We also have a thermal imaging camera which we sometimes use to help spot animals or birds in dim conditions, or on open hillsides where they can seeming blend in and be otherwise almost invisible.

We can pick you up from most accommodation on the island and will take you off the beaten track and away from the overcrowded tourist hotspots to quieter and more secluded areas. Depending on your level of fitness you can either stay near the vehicle, or your guide will be happy to lead you up trails to search for certain species if you'd like the chance to get out and explore a little further.

We do need you to contact us and book your date well in advance of your visit please so we can be sure we have a guide available for you, or be able to offer you some alternatives.

Should you be interested in making your visit a bit longer with us, we can help put together a trip covering several days on Skye and the Lochalsh region with us and potentially other tour operators to include a boat trip for example.

If you are new to spotting eagles when you visit Skye, don't worry, we will soon show you what to watch for as our guides are experts. If you are travelling by yourself and are not sure what you are seeing have a look at this golden eagle first and notice the quite broad and straight wings with the obvious 'fingers' as the outer feathers are often known. It is also fairly dark overall underneath (although juveniles do have white patches). The second photo of a white-tailed eagle shows they are even bigger with a longer wingspan again and of course as the name suggests, the adults' white tail gives it away immediately.

Did you see the latest episode about Woodland habitats on Sunday evening? As you probably know, the Isle of Skye is a stronghold for white-tailed eagles and we are lucky to see them on most of our SKYEFARI tours. They often nest high up in trees so woodland and forestry is important for them.
They are hard to miss once spotted due to their immense size and 'barn-door' wings, and of course the white tail in mature adults. Join us on a SKYEFARI this year and you have great chances at spotting one of these magnificent birds.

Common seals, also known as harbour seals, can have a very varied colouration in shades of greys and browns mostly but all across the spectrum from light to dark. They are usually mottled like this one which can make for a very effective camouflage both when hauled out like this one, but particularly underwater where the light plays through the seaweed.
Seals are just one of our main "Skye Five" targets on our wildlife safaris around the Isle of Skye, and we have both the larger grey seals as well as these common seals.
