WANT TO SEE AN OTTER?

Well no guarantees but . . We’ve seen Otters on each of the last 18 Tours that we’ve done. One view was brief, but most were really good, with our female and her two cubs making up a lot of the sightings. And the day we didn’t see an Otter? Well we had sitting Golden Eagles at two locations. And a pair of White-tailed Sea Eagles sat and flying along a stretch of beach. And a Porpoise 🙂

TOUR BOOKINGS 2025

Availability is limited to just 8 places per day, so it’s recommended to book as early as possible to avoid disappointment. Especially anyone wanting a Private Tour as they need to be the first (and only) enquiry for that particular day. We’ve been getting bookings for next year for a while now, with the end of April / beginning of May particularly popular.

An amazing sighting today, the end of season greyness and drizzle totally ignored.

We were watching a female Otter and her two cubs fishing along the opposite shore, when an adult White-tailed Sea Eagle landed on the rocks right next to them. I thought the Otters might move away, but instead they came out onto the rocks and aggressively surrounded the Eagle. The Eagle won the stand-off though and the Otters retired back to the water. The Eagle flew off shortly after, but as the Otters weren’t sure where it had gone, they brought the big fish they caught a few minutes later all the way over to our side to eat - right in front of us!

Golden Eagle, another immature WTE, Seals and Red Deer also today.

I’m not working today - and this is the reason why! It’s not often that a weather front is so clear on the rain radar.

Great day out yesterday, 6 different Otters, low flying Golden Eagles, 4 Sea Eagles, and ended the day with a lovely female Hen Harrier.

Clouded out as my location often is. But a big Aurora tonight . . . but even better - my first glimpse of “Steve” 🙂

I say on the website “don’t be put off by bad weather”, and this is especially true about the forecasts. I use a number of sites to gauge what is going to happen, and reality is generally completely different to what the Met Office and BBC say. Monday and yesterday being great examples, poor forecasts, but ending up decent days and barely getting wet. Most importantly the wildlife sightings were as good (if not better) than so called nice days.

Need more convincing? In the last 2 days we’ve had: 9 Sea Eagles (two very close in an airborne battle over some food). 4 Golden Eagles (one as close as they get, sat peeking over some rocks in the drizzle). 4 Otters (one of our regulars with new cubs being a lovely surprise). Lots of our usual Seals etc. . . and two Hen Harriers just next to us on a hillside.

If I think the weather is going to affect our day’s sightings then I’ll cancel it and try and move you to a different day or refund you. But do trust me on the forecast, most weather apps get it wrong for Skye.

It’s been a busy Summer as usual, and I’ve neglected Facebook (as usual!). Most days we’ve been getting all our target species, but yesterday and today have been outstanding. Two adult White-tailed Sea Eagles yesterday, flying and sat in a tree 20m just away. A pod of Dolphins just out in the loch, while we also watched an Otter on the shore below us. 4 Golden Eagles in total. Today: more Dolphins, 3 different Otters, 10 Eagles in total . . . one sat Golden Eagle being mobbed by a Ringtail Hen Harrier. And finally nice weather today too.

A day off today, and a short walk at Staffin enjoying some beautiful weather.

A nice way to round off a great week of Wildlife Tours. Some lovely views of Otters, one particularly close on Thursday. An epic battle between a Golden Eagle and a White-tailed Sea Eagle. A brief but beautiful male Hen Harrier. No whales this week but we saw a Minke last week, a few porpoises and dolphins though.

Mixed fortunes in recent weeks, with Otters being particularly tricky to find. Had 3 days on the trot without any sightings a few weeks ago. None today, and a last gasp female with two cubs at the last stop yesterday (although it was a brilliant view, worth the wait). Today was pretty disappointing, no Otters or Sea Eagles (one distant one didn’t really count). And although we did have two Golden Eagles overhead for about 5 minutes, they were a bit too high for a really good view. We had to content ourselves with Deer, Seals, Red-throated and Great Northern Divers, a nice Golden Plover, Common Sandpipers, and a few other regulars.

Here are some photos Sarah Brammer took on Monday of one of best moments recently, when this Otter brought a crab ashore right in front of us.

It’s been very cold and frosty on Skye, fantastic weather to be out and about as long as you’re wrapped up well.

2024 has started well, with Otters, Golden Eagles, and White-tailed Sea Eagles, on all our days out. Yesterday’s Otters were initially elusive, but perseverance paid off with great views of two females with two cubs each, both in and out of the water. Then Otter number seven munching on a fish on the beach about 12m from us.

BOOKINGS are coming in thick and fast now, we’ve very limited availability left for early May, and for the end of June. Book early to avoid disappointment!

Another big aurora tonight. Roads are too icy to risk heading out for photos, so will just enjoy it through the window.

WILDLIFE TOURS 2024

We’re structuring Tours differently next year, with Tours running on MONDAYS, TUESDAYS, THURSDAYS, and SATURDAYS.

Although this means a slight reduction in availability, anyone staying on the island for a couple of days, and booking in advance, should still be able to secure a day out with us.

EIGHT OTTERS!

On Sunday we managed to see an amazing eight Otters in the one day. Two females with two cubs each, and two further individuals. Just the four Otters yesterday, and two (possibly three, as it was hard to tell if the third was one of the ones we’d seen earlier a bit further along the coast) today.

Skye’s weather can be “interesting” at times, this thunderstorm a few weeks ago ending a month where my weather station recorded just 0.10 inches of rain! July is starting out a little unsettled, but that’s good news for wildlife watching. Low cloud keeps raptors much closer to us, cloud in general makes scanning the skies and lochs much easier too (and no heat haze). We’ve a few spaces available this week and next, just remember to bring a coat 🙂

Any of you that have been out with me in “less than perfect” weather might just recognise these two! They are my go to Golden Eagles for poorer weather, and usually sit in this sheltered little spot. As a bonus it’s much closer to the road than where they sit on sunnier days.
