The Crofter’s House is conveniently located close to many of Skye’s attractions. This is Trotternish Ridge, an area formed by a series of ancient land slips. The drive / walk over this landscape is stunning with hairpin bends and steep gradients on the narrow road.

The rowan tree is one of the most sacred trees in Scottish folk tradition and its protective powers were historically so highly regarded that it was planted outside most dwellings. As well as planting a rowan tree by your house is said to keep those who reside within safe from bad luck and evil spirits, it was also believed that carrying Rowan twigs on your person was a way of using its protective qualities to keep you safe from threats of evil spells and witchcraft. The Crofter's House

For a while now, I have wanted to commission a filmmaker to capture the essence of The Crofter’s House - the sense of peace and tranquility you experience when you stay here. I came across Sarah Mason through my work as a graphic designer (Sanna Mac) when she created brand films for a couple of our clients. Her work conveys a sense of home as she captures the heart of the subject through her use of light and visual story telling. I was delighted when she agreed to come and stay for a few days last November and (despite absolutely dreadful weather!) captured some stunning clips in and around the cottage which she has woven together into this beautiful meditation. The music in the film is by Arun Sood from his new album, Searching Erskine, that is a tribute to the uninhabited island of Vallay, which lies approximately two miles off the northwest coast of North Uist, where his grandmother once lived. The Old Dictaphone, a track that features a Hebridean song, feels like the perfect backdrop to the film and we are so grateful to Arun in allowing us to use it.
