It's been a Whale of a year for Minke ! Minke Whale sightings off the Yorkshire coast usually draw to a close around early October and sightings of Minke Whale off the Yorkshire coast according to Scarborough Porpoise's figures are 107 for the 2023 to date compared to 21 for 2022 representing a 500% increase in sightings of these gentle giants in our seas ! The are a number of factors which may have resulted in the significant increase in sightings occurred a) Some years Minke food which is fish such as Sprat, Sand Eel, Herring and Mackeral is offshore rather than inshore and the Whales are where there food is, other years the fish are closer to shore which seems to have been the case this year b) There have undoubtedly been more observers looking for these gentle giants off our coast but this does not explain the large increase in sightings this year in itself c) The weather conditions play a role as although adult Minke are 10 metres in length they are easily missed in rough rather than calm seas as they rarely move in such a manner as to cause a splash as Dolphins often do. It will be fascinating to see how sightings for the summer of 2024 unfold over next summer.
