Love is well and truly in the air - and not because we've just had Valentine's Day. The gannets are taking stock of the cliffs in anticipation of setting up home with their one true love. These seabirds mate for life - even though they don't spend winter together. So maybe absence really does make the heart grow fonder. The first sighting this season of razorbills happened a few days ago - so things are starting to hot up, even if the weather isn't. The cruel sideways rain at the start of half-term weeks has made for a slow start to the first holidays of the year. With kids itching to get outside, volunteers in the Seabird Centre have been at full stretch keeping them entertained inside with some of the treasures kept on our 'Wonder Wall' - a chunk of a mammoth's tusk, bird's skulls and baby gannet feathers. Meanwhile, when the weather permits, work continues on the new wildlife garden. And, even if we do say so ourselves, the area around the bird feeding station is shaping up nicely. The very ritzy new bug hotel has been given a slate roof and the recycled palette fencing is ready for decorating. It won't be long before we're putting in the bedding plants. And we're hoping for another glimpse of the long-eared owl that dropped in last week.
