We have had a visit from our regular guest and dear friend, Tim the moth expert from Guernsey. He bought his moth trap which had been set up in the field with a powerful light that attracts moths to where they can rest on egg boxes before being identified and released. We tend to treat these inspects as a nuisance but they are so beautiful! If you want to learn more, watch the videos, sound up! 🧚‍♂️

We have the most fascinating glow worms on the Downloads, well worth a nighttime stroll up the hill!

Nature enthusiasts will have the opportunity to witness one of nature’s wonders on Shaftesbury’s doorstep at the end of the month. North Dorset National Trust ranger Clive Whitbourn will lead a walk, with the Cranborne Chase National Landscape, to the top of Melbury Hill at 9:30 p.m. on 26 July to observe the phenomenon of glowworms. Clive hopes for a moonless night, increasing the chance of seeing the glowworms. In an interview with Alfred, he explained how these beetles create light, why they do it, and why this area is ideal for observing them.

The Smithy lies just across the yard from the main house and was the original Blacksmiths forge. It still retains many of the original features and blacksmiths artefacts and has made a wonderful conversion with views across the village green to Fontmell Down.
