⛵️🐚🌊💖We’ve loved welcoming so many amazing people to The Portpatrick Pad over the last 18 months or so and truly appreciate the care most folks have shown for our lovely wee family holiday home.

Unfortunately, due to recent incidents, we’ve had to make the difficult decision to start charging a refundable damage deposit. We understand this may come as an inconvenience, but it’s necessary to ensure the property remains in great condition for all future guests🙏

Rest assured, the deposit will be returned quickly when everything is left in good order. Not something we would have hoped to have put in place but probably for the best in the long run... Thank you for your understanding and continued support! 💖🌊🐚⛵️

A.L.🗼🗼The Old Portpatrick Lighthouse guards the harbour at Portpatrick, along the west coast of the Rhinns of Galloway. Scotland..
Established: 1774, 1790
Discontinued: 1900
Engineer: Thomas Smith
In September 1910, the Parish Council asked if they could use the lighthouse to display a light inland. The NLB allowed them to continue to use the tower, and the Council was still using it in 1920.
The lighthouse stands alongside the former keeper’s cottage and Lighthouse Pottery, which sells a range of arts and gifts and are now privately owned..

🐶 Dogs are AAAAALWAYS welcome at the Pad, especially when they're as well behaved as little Utah.

Utah is a Sheltie which, according to the Wiki: "The Shetland Sheepdog, is a breed of herding dog that originated in the Shetland Islands of Scotland. It was formally recognised by The Kennel Club in 1909. It was originally called the Shetland Collie, but this caused controversy amongst Rough Collie breeders of the time, so the name was changed. It is a small dog, clever, vocal, willing to please and trustworthy.

Like the Shetland pony, Shetland cattle and the Shetland sheep, the Shetland Sheepdog is a hardy but diminutive breed developed to thrive amidst the harsh and meagre conditions of its native islands. While the Sheltie still excels at herding, today it is often raised as a working dog and/or family pet.

The Sheltie's origins are obscure, but it is not a direct descendant of the Rough Collie, which it largely resembles. Rather, the Sheltie is a descendant of small specimens of the Scottish Collie and the King Charles Spaniel. They were originally a small mixed-breed dog, often only about 20 to 30 centimetres (8 to 12 inches) in height at the shoulder, and it is thought that the original Shetland herding dogs were of the Spitz type, and were crossed with Collies from mainland Britain. In the early 20th century, James Loggie added a small Rough Collie to the breeding stock, and helped establish the breed that would become the modern Shetland Sheepdog."

Go West is back again! 🤩

For their next adventure “Out West”, the Hairy Bikers are back in Scotland, but this time in the stunningly beautiful region of Dumfries and Galloway.

It’s another place close to Dave and Si’s hearts, a rural paradise, with a glorious coastline that stretches for more than 200 miles, which they used to visit thirty years ago when they first became best friends.

On this return visit they’ll be looking to explore and unearth some hidden gems amongst this wonderful food producing region.

Dunskey Castle in Portpatrick, Dumfries and Galloway.

The ruins of Dunskey Castle are perched on top of a rocky outcrop which sits high above the Irish Sea.

The towerhouse was built in the mid-16th century for the Adairs of Kinhilt, the same family that owned the Castle of St John in Stranraer - and the long wing to the north was added in the 1620's. By 1700 the whole building was derelict.

The defensive ditch on the landward side is all that survives of an earlier Adair Castle. First recorded in the 14th century, this castle was destroyed around 1500 by the McCullochs of Myrton and Cardoness.
