Host/Hostesses required for Loyton Shoots

We are looking for enthusiastic and hardworking staff to work as the Shoot Day Hosts/Hostesses. This role involves setting up the shoot lodge in the morning, serving tea and coffee. Then driving the shoot landrover out to the drives, cooking the 11s and serving drinks etc. Back to shoot lodge to set up for, and serve, lunch and then clearing up at the end of the day. Sociable, friendly and smiley applicants please!
Excellent rate of pay and tips. You will need to be confident driving a landrover, working on your own and not mind being outside in the cold! Ideally we would like someone who is happy to return in future seasons.

Alan Michael Floyd

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart I write to you with the tragic news of our friend and colleague Alan Floyd, Head Keeper at Haddeo and Miltons who died on Thursday June 1st. Our love and deepest sympathy are with Alan’s family during this difficult and challenging time.

At the age of twelve Alan would be seen in the Loyton yard or on the shoot asking to do jobs and trying to be involved with anything shoot related. His infectious enthusiasm grew and once old enough he fulfilled his dream to be a gamekeeper and went on to work on several shoots including Cruwys Morchard, Porlock, Miltons, Stuckeridge and Bittesombe.

In 2005 we employed him as a keeper on the Loyton shoot and he remained with Loyton throughout the growth of the firm over the next eighteen years. In 2012 when the opportunity arose for us to re-establish the Haddeo shoot Alan jumped at the opportunity to merge this with the Loyton shoot and continue to expand and develop the combined entity. In 2020 the Haddeo Sporting Club took over the lease at Miltons and this familiar shoot from his early career was encompassed into Haddeo. He ran the two shoots with great professionalism creating a number of new and impossibly difficult drives, constantly tinkering and improving it.

Alan’s dedication over the years never ceased and by no small amount has helped to craft and build the shoots we see today. His knowledge and experience are irreplaceable and our community will not be the same again, we have lost a great countryman and a very dear friend.

The family will be holding a private service on Friday 30th June and would like to extend an invitation to a celebration of his life on Saturday 1st July at midday, here at Loyton. Please if you are to attend it would be most helpful if you could RSVP in advance to [email protected] to give us an idea of numbers for catering. No black necessary.

THE SEASON AHEAD 👉

Here we are preparing for next season having just about wrapped the last. Looking back, ’22/23 was challenging with Bird Flu playing its hand, but we made it through with some exceptional days under our belt. We’re looking forward to autumn already and our guys and girls have been working hard to ensure its success. The birds are being released in a couple of months, so we’re drilling cover crops, organising new drives and finalising shoot days in anticipation.

On that note, there are only a few early partridge days available in September:

Challacombe on Wednesday 6th
Molland; Miltons on Monday 11th
Molland on Tuesday 12th

Thereafter, there is some availability for partridge, pheasant or mixed days throughout the season but the books close in a few weeks so please get in touch sooner rather than later.

Beat Keeper - We are searching for a beat keeper with a minimum of 3 years experience to work our shoot on the edge of Exmoor. The successful candidate will need to be hard working, knowledgeable, honest and a team player. Extensive experience of hand feeding and rearing is required for this role. Own dogs, current shotgun certificate and full UK driving licence are also essential. With a start date of May 2023, the position comes with an exceptionally generous package for the right candidate.

What a send off today for a legend of a man, Tony Nash, MBE. Without doubt one of the finest men I have ever had the privilege to know. Tony was a huge support to me in the early years when I was developing the shoot. Tony, together with my father, were there for me throughout, guiding me and supporting me to ensure the sport remained true. I owe them both a huge debt of gratitude. I am sure they will now be telling each other the same joke over and over again from up above! Rest in peace, we will miss you so very much.
