At a time when so few young people have any awareness of the significance of D Day and of the sacrifices made by so many young men barely out of their teens - it is more important than ever that we commemorate them and tell their stories. They sacrificed themselves so that succeeding generations could be born and grow up in freedom. We take our freedom for granted now BUT a time may come when we realise just how precious it really is and how easily lost it can be.

Venturing further into the garden now the rain has stopped and what do I find? One of our banana trees has bananas. The tree itself is a bit battered from all the winter winds BUT yes we have bananas..

Sinister or cute? Yesterday, in our little pond I saw this. A toad cuddling a gold fish. The cuddle went on all day and the fish didn't seem overly bothered. So, is this an inter species love in or is the toad exhibiting anti social behaviour? Any amateur or professional naturalists have an answer?

Very enjoyable meal at East in The West, Torwood Street Torquay. The food offering is above the run of the mill curry house and daily specials are something I've not ever seen in an "Indian" restaurant before. I went with the specials and had a scallop starter followed by sea bass in banana leaves. Really beautiful.

Once we pass Christmas and await the New Year, the old year does seem a little like a guest who has outstayed their welcome. 2023? Well, at least there was something like a near normal year at last. Yes, there were plenty of challenges and some heart break - particularly the loss of our dear little Hector, but there were a lot of good times and hope for 2024. And of course crazy, zany Charlie entered our lives and started us on a new journey with him.

Summer's rattling by and after a brief cooler interlude the heat has come back today. This hot and dry summer has been loved by some plants in the garden (like the red hot pokers and the sea holly) but not quite so loved by others such as the hostas that seem quite grumpy this year. Good year for roses too.

This year we have also added some plants purely for their scent and so we now have more jasmine and honeysuckle that fill the garden with their scent in the evening after a hot day.

Yesterday, we had to say goodbye to our darling little boy Hector. We are heartbroken and left with an enormous hole in our lives. Hew was such a big part of our life at Muntham and before that at The Somerville. He gave us pure and boundless love and many laughs along the way. Sleep well little man.

As summer's drawing to a close, it's great to see some fantastic things to look forward to in the autumn. The ERBID company has come good on its promise to add new events and festivals into the calendar and The English Riviera Walking Festival (15th to 22nd October) is a really welcome addition. A quick glance through the guided walks available brings it home to you that even if you are very familiar with some of The English Riviera there is so much more to learn as a local or a visitor. The walks are beginning to fill up so early booking would be wise. But even if you miss out there are some self guided tours available too.

With these lovely long days, there's nothing better than getting out into the garden. This is my Aeonium Garden with a few other interlopers. Started a month or so ago and now beginning to look OK. Born out of a final realisation that this bed gets roasted in the summer and the palm tree at the centre of the bed was sucking out just about all of the moisture from the bed and I needed plants that were pretty drought tolerant...

The sun may have temporarily deserted the English Riviera but every so often something makes your heart sing as if it was a summers day and this beautiful rhododendron at Cockington did it for us this weekend. it's right by Cockington Court on the carriageway - how could you walk on by without pausing a while to admire such a beauty? Old as the hills and still going strong...
