At Wesdale we love welcoming dogs, and they love our large secure garden. We just ask that dogs aren't allowed in the bedrooms or on the furniture, and that you clean up and dispose of any dog mess.

The dogs also love the coastal walks and beaches. Rock Beach, Porthilly Cove and Daymer Bay allow dogs all year round.
Polzeath Beach allows dogs all year round, but there is a restriction in place from 15 May to 30 September when dogs are not allowed on the beach between 10am and 6pm.

Those who of us who have been coming down to Cornwall for many years have seen the shifting sands and dunes at Daymer Bay.

The South West Coastal Monitoring (SWCM) programme have routinely been collecting data about Daymer Bay with 9 flights since 2006 using Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and aerial imagery data and have an interesting report athttps://www.makingspaceforsand.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/35.-SWCM_MS4S_Report_Daymer_Bay.pdf

Overall Daymer Bay beach has seen volume fluctuations but has gradually eroded. The dune system was heavily impacted by the 2013/2014 winter storms, but the Beach Zone remained stable.

The Mobile Zone (beach and dunes) has reduced by 15% between 2007 and 2022. Until 2012 the volume was steadily increasing, however the 2013/14 winter period saw a 20% reduction in volume, following which the Mobile Zone has remained stable but has not returned to 2012 levels.
The Beach Zone has shown a relatively constant loss of beach material between 2009 and 2022 of around 1.5% p.a. The Beach Zone volume was relatively unaffected by the 2013/14 winter storms.
The Dune contours indicate that the dune system has retreated by 5- 8 m, whilst the main beach has narrowed by ~23 m.

Disaster strikes - Kelly's ice cream van adrift on the high seas.

Will there be enough supplies left for summer or will it be Salted Cornish Vanilla?

Rescue teams were sent to Harlyn Bay near Padstow at about 17:00 BST on Sunday.

Fabulous in February - and we still have some availability.
This year is a Leap year too which surely needs taking advantage of…Hence the ancient tradition of it being ‘acceptable’ for women to propose to men on the 29th February, and in some Celtic parts of Britain there being a forfeit if he refuses (generally measured in gloves or gowns). Whichever way round, we’d love a successful marriage proposal at Wesdale – oh, the romance of it.

Shrove Tuesday falls on 13th February and the Cornish have their own twist on how to best enjoy pancakes: with clotted cream.

Sprinkle the crepe with soft brown sugar, hand-squeeze a quarter orange or lemon over the sugar and spread a dollop of clotted cream along one edge. Roll up and eat with a spoon and fork.

Spring days
With 10 hours of daylight in mid-February and lengthening days, we revel in early springs: and days out exploring. Be it wandering heritage sites, stomping the coast path or cycling the Camel Trail; discovering ancient fishing villages or hidden beaches at low tide – there is still more. From daring sea dips at Greenaway or bodyboarding at Polzeath to more sedate garden visits and walking tours of Port Isaac, Trebetherick is fabulous in February.

Good to read about the big renovation taking place at our neighbours - the St Moritz Hotel and Cowshed Spa.

Whilst they undergo the works they have developed a new, wild, winter wonder. Dip your toe into the invigorating, energising benefits of cold water exposure alongside the restorative, warming effects of heat therapy in the St. Moritz wild outdoor spa.

A great facility for Trebetherick and the local area.

Cornish Weather is one of life's mysteries.

Winters are short and spring comes early, with some of the UK’s earliest daffodil and new potatoes being Cornish grown. Snow is a novelty due to the mild climate; with nothing more than occasional ground frost in a cold snap. February is often glorious with Easter regularly saturated in bright skies and spring blooms.

May and June are a celebration of Cornish hedgerows, with the wildflowers at their peak. We’ll not mislead - summer showers come and go but they refresh the countryside and keep the grass green.

Autumn lingers in Cornwall, with Guy Fawkes night being our marker of the evening air turning fresher – although Christmas can still be too mild to light a fire.

Don’t forget we’re a ‘coat warmer’ than the rest of The Westcountry and have about 2 hours extra daylight (1 each end of the day) than most of the UK. It’s all to do with The Gulf Stream and our southerly location – expect mild off-peak seasons and more outdoor time.

On Saturday 2nd September the wonderful wild coastal garden of Daymer House will be opening its gates for the National Garden Scheme Cornwall. Two acres of wild coastal gardens in the grounds of an Arts & Crafts house. The garden is of Edwardian style enjoying a certain amount of formalism, with 'outside rooms' created using dry stone walls, rustic paths and stone flagged terraces that merge into woodland glades and wild areas. There is an interesting mix of lawns, mature trees, woodland, herbaceous borders, pond and vegetable garden.

DAYMER HOUSE
Daymer Bay, Trebetherick, Wadebridge, Cornwall, PL27 6SA
Set in the stunning surroundings of the North Cornwall coast, you will find two acres of wild coastal gardens in the grounds of an elegant Edwardian house. Composed of an interesting mix of lawns, mature trees, woodland, herbaceous borders, pond and vegetable garden, leading down to the sandy bay of Daymer. The garden is set out in the Edwardian Arts & Crafts style enjoying a certain amount of formalism about the house to carry on the geometric lines and enclosed feeling of architecture, with ‘outside rooms’ created using traditional craftsmanship, for the construction of drystone walls and stone-flagged terraces, which merge into the landscape, with woodland glades, wild areas, rustic paths and water gardens. A garden to relax and unwind to the sounds of the gently lapping sea.

OPENING TIMES, ADMISSION AND ACCESSIBILITY
Saturday 2nd September
1.00pm until 6.00pm
Adult: £5/Children: Free
For this open day you can book your tickets in advance or turn up and pay on the day.

A May Day celebration quite unlike any other, the Padstow Obby Oss is an ancient festival steeped in mystery. Each and every 1st of May, the Old Oss and Blue Ribbon Oss are let loose from their stables to roam around Padstow. A tradition that has taken place for centuries, the narrow streets of this Cornish fishing port fill with tens of thousands of people every year, all jostling for a glimpse of the famous Obby Oss…

Happy St Piran's Day with Jam first!

Gool Peran Lowen!

To celebrate St.Piran's day let's play a little game - here are four Cornish truths and one lie...

1. Kernewek is the native language of Cornwall. 🗣️

2. Cornwall has over 300 beaches. 🏖️

3. Cornish Tin has been around for 4000 years! ⛏️

4. At least 120 million Cornish Pasties are made each year. 🥟

5. The only way to eat a scone is clotted cream first, then jam. 🥄

Let us know in the comments which you think is the outright lie!

It doesn't get much better than this.
