There is one common theme throughout the changes being made by the Building Safety Act: accountability. The intent is to implement mechanisms within the law to identify who is responsible at each stage during the design and construction of building work and, of course, once a building is occupied.

Ahead of its first meeting in September, the Building Safety Regulator has recently made a number of appointments to its new industry competence committee.

The committee’s role will involve offering guidance to both the regulatory body and the industry, aiming to improve competency and monitor the progress of the new building safety regime, which they hope will be in full operation by April of next year.

The UK government has introduced a new set of guidelines known as the Residential Buildings Remediation Code (referred to as the ‘Code’) which is to be adhered to throughout the duration of remediation projects.

The primary focus of the Code is to address and minimise the fire safety hazards within structures that incorporate external cladding. It has been separated into four main sections: the scope, undertaking of remediation, living with remediation and general compliance.
