Did you know that two Saxon Kings were buried in Wareham?

Two Saxon kings are reputed to have been buried in Wareham at the site of Lady St Mary’s Church, according the the Anglo Saxon Chronicles. King Beorhtric, who apparently died from accidentally tasting poison prepared by his wife in 802. The other was Edward the Martyr who was murdered at Corfe castle in 978 possibly on the orders of his stepmother. His remains were eventually removed to Shaftesbury Abbey.

Tune into autumn at Studland, and listen out for the sound of honking Brent Geese as they arrive in huge numbers to winter in our sheltered bays. Around this time of year large flocks of winter thrushes also arrive from the Continent to take advantage of our milder winters and to plunder the hedgerows of berries. They gorge on the hawthorn berries before moving on to the next feeding grounds. Listen out for the distinctive β€˜tseep’ call of the Redwing and the harsher β€˜tsak tsak’ of the Fieldfare. https://bit.ly/3r7oQkI
