A new seaside bus service has replaced a much loved railway line since July, 2022.
The new service has replaced the Wells' Harbour Railway, which announced its closure last year.
Now, Holkham Estate, which runs the service, has announced more details about the two buses which will replace it. The main bus will be fully electric – the first of this particular kind in the UK – providing a transport solution which the estate says is pioneering and sustainable, in recognition of how important this will become between now and 2030.
The electric bus will lower to kerb height with an access ramp to accommodate accessibility needs.
The second bus is a 1951 Leyland Tiger – a vintage open-top bus that started its life transporting visitors around the Channel Islands – which will accompany the service on high days and holidays.

WELLS STREET PARTY
THE QUEEN’S PLANTINUM JUBILEE 2022
In June 2022 HM The Queen will have reached the unique milestone of 70 years of service to the Nation as Monarch and Head of State. To mark this historic event there will be year-long Platinum Jubilee celebrations throughout the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. The Government has announced an extended bank holiday from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5thJune 2022. These four days of celebrations will include public events and community activities. An outline of these national celebrations is as follows:
Thursday 2nd June – The Queen’s Birthday Parade (Trooping the Colour)
The lighting of the Platinum Jubilee Beacons across the country
Friday 3rd June - Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral
Saturday 4th June - Platinum Party at the Palace
Sunday 5thJune - ‘The Big Jubilee Lunch’. Communities throughout the UK and Commonwealth come together for a Street Party
The Wells Street Party committee has held many successful Street Party events, such as the Royal Wedding, The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and commemorations to mark the ending of WW1 And WW2. Wells Street Party is now in the process of organising a ‘street party’ on the Buttlands for the afternoon of Sunday 5thJune 2022 from 12 to 5pm.
Wells Street Party will provide seating and tables for 200 on a first come basis (of course you can bring your own if you wish). The idea is that you bring your own picnic food. However, there will also be takeaway food and soft drinks for sale on Buttlands. In addition, we are planning to have a tent selling beers and wine, a childrens’ fun fair and other fairground type stalls around the Buttlands. Also, music will be provided throughout the afternoon.
The plan is to have a fun afternoon on the Buttlands for our community and visitors. The theme will be the 1950s, so please feel free to get in the mood and dress accordingly.
If any organisation in Wells wishes to have a stall on the Buttlands on the day, please get in touch with one of the Committee members.
Finally, The above activities have to be paid for and Wells Street Party relies on donations.
The more money we raise, the more we can provide. Your donations, no matter how big or small, will be gratefully received. Alternatively, you may consider sponsoring one of the activities. To make a donation please contact one of the Committee members or you can donate direct by bank transfer to:

Food for thought
Lord Forgive me when I whine!

Today upon a ‘bus I saw
A lovely girl with golden hair
I envied her, she seemed so fair,
When she rose to leave
I saw her bobble down the aisle,
She had one leg, and used a crutch
Oh God forgive me when I whine,
I have two legs, the world is mine.

I stopped to buy some sweets,
The lad who sold it had such charm,
I talked to him, he seemed so glad,
And as I left he said to me,
I thank you, you’ve been so kind.
It’s nice to talk with folk like you,
You see, he said, I’m blind.
Oh God forgive me when I whine,
I have two eyes, the world is mine.

Later while walking down the street,
I saw a child with eyes of blue,
He stood and watched the others play,
I stopped an moment and then said,
Why don’t you join the others dear?
He looked without a word
And then I knew he couldn’t hear,
Oh God forgive me when I whine
I have two ears, the world is mine.

With feet to take me where I want to go,
With eyes to see the sunset’s glow,
With ears to hear what I want to know,
Oh God forgive me when I whine,
I’m blessed, indeed, the world is mine.
Anon.
