Exeter Cathedral Cloisters
The roof is going on! This drone footage was captured by photographer Mike Smallcombe as the timbers were lowered into position from a crane, while the carpenters from Emanuel Hendry were ready below to slot them into place. The operation went smoothly, as the oak beams were lowered into their final resting place.

Our team have been continuing work on the unique project at A la Ronde. Work has been progressing well in the Shell Gallery. One of the first steps has been to consolidate and stabilise the existing decoration with dispersed lime grout - unfortunately the process is a little more time consuming than it appears on film and requires a lot of patience.
We have now moved onto reattaching shells and other decoration that have fallen from the walls over the years. Most of the shells do not have a specified location so it is rather like a giant jigsaw trying to work out where they all go!

Over the last few months weâve started work on a very exciting special project conserving the fascinating interior decorations at A La Ronde, an 18th-century National Trust house near Exmouth.
SSHC are the main contractor for this prestigious project, and are working with specialist conservators including @bainbridgecons and @hare_and_humphreys - Stay posted for more details about whatâs happening and how weâre going to be doing it!

Last month our conservators returned to the Church of St Thomas in the Isle of Wight to complete the conservation work of two monuments, the Elizabeth Monument, and the Horsey Monument.
A variety of treatments were carried out, including gel applications, dry cleaning, and re-gilding to achieve a sympathetic clean, and enhanced these monuments.
The Elizabeth Monument is in memory of Princess Elizabeth, died 1650 at the age of 14. Princess Elizabeth was the daughter of King Charles I. The monument was commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1854. Elizabeths effigy is carved from marble, and lies asleep with her head resting on a Bible.
The Horsey Monument, is in memory of Edward Horsey, died 1582, courtier of Elizabeth I. Captain of the Isle of Wight in 1565, Edward had an interesting past, far too much to capture here, but well worth reading up on. His family crest sits central on the canopy, and the tomb is made from alabaster and marble.
This has been an enjoyable project, and we are pleased with the results.
Latex poultice application.
Two of our conservators have recently skipped across The Solent to work on two monuments at the Church of St.Thomas on the Isle of White.
Both monuments are undergoing cleaning, but they require different approaches.
The Elizabeth monument is a marble effigy and limestone plinth and surround. This has been cleaned with a latex poultice - shown in our time lapse video.
The second monument is the Horsey Monument, which is more complex, comprising of Alabaster, Purbeck Marble, Slate/Ashford Black limestone, and Portland stone. Some of the surfaces have previous coatings, large areas of gilding and polychrome. The different substates, decoration and coatings present on the Horsey Monument all have their own contrasting treatment needs and restrictions. The cleaning and conservation of the monument is therefore complex, requiring different treatments and a sensitive and considered approach. A complex task, but one our conservators are enjoying. More updates in the coming weeks, with the cleaning of the Horsey Monument.
Check out that London morning skyline!
Our rope access team - currently working at St Michaelâs - Highgate.
Weâre enjoying some little video clips of the team working at St John the Baptist - Burford this week. ...more to come at some point!
This slender spire alone is around 100ft tall! ...amazing to consider constructing a structure like this without todayâs machinery and safety systems. đ€Ż
