Spot the difference

1885 – Merley House was built by George M F Molesworth. It was used as a private house until WW2 when it was used as a base for soldiers. In 1946 it was purchased by a local hotel operator who renamed it Merley Hotel shown in the old photo probably 1946. Probably under 80 years or erosion. Now that is frightening.

In 1959 it changed its name to The Elizabethan Club and Restaurant after being bought by the Braddick family in 1951. The building was modernised in 2011 and renamed Pier House.

Five great places to visit in North Devon

Planning a trip to North Devon and not sure where to start your adventure?

Lynton & Lynmouth

We’re not cheating adding these two together, they’re known as being twin towns, mostly because Lynton is literally above Lynmouth. Like, seriously, it sits on top of the hill and you have to catch the famous cliff railway to visit both. This area is known as Little Switzerland, something the great romantic poets named it after spending time there and being inspired by its beauty.

Westward Ho, Devon, United Kingdom

Another place named by a wordsmith who lived in the area – Westward Ho! can be found just outside Bideford and during its development, was named after a local writer’s book about a similar village. It remains the only place in the UK with an ! as part of its name and forms part of one of England’s most popular seaside resorts.

Woolacombe

Home to Britain’s Best Beach winner several years in a row, Woolacombe has everything you could want from a seaside holiday resort. You’ll find award winning places to eat, great places to stay and plenty to keep the whole family entertained, plus of course, there is that incredible beach.

Ilfracombe

This harbour town is quickly becoming the culinary hub of North Devon – there are an incredible array of eateries to experience, particularly along Fore Street, and being home to Verity, the sculpture created by Damien Hirst, it is a hub for culture too.

Croyde

If you’re visiting for the surf, Croyde is the place to go. The village is known as being one of the premium spots for
watersports, has a long, mostly flat beach and the ideal conditions for surfers of all abilities.

Beautiful place to stay, with great sea views. The interior was tastefully furnished and had everything we needed in the living area, bathrooms and kitchen, also loved the large balcony and it's chairs. With three bedrooms and two bathrooms (one ensuite) this would be ideal for families with children.
One thing I would perhaps suggest is to fit a blind in the upstairs bathroom although the window is frosted.
I would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending Lighthouse View to anybody either as a pair or families

A lovely modern house with all you could need for a fantastic break. We were there in March and the heating and hot water were extremely efficient. Kitchen equipment very comprehensive, tv had in built DVD player (a bonus) and it was just steps to the beach! All in all a great location, reception was very helpful and gave good tips on where to eat and shop. Would recommend without hesitation!

Lighthouse View was a perfect apartment for our family of 5 adults - plenty of living space and 2 bathrooms - it was just right for a few days break after Christmas. It is very clean, and well equipped with everything you might need, also a good heating system makes it very warm and cosy for a winter visit.

Westward Ho UK’s cosiest seaside stay for winter

Sandy stretches aren’t just for summer. Here’s where to hunker down for a beachy break now the fair-weather crowds have departed

Now is the ideal time for a trip to a Westward Ho Beach and stay 8 Lighthouse View, Westward Ho The surf tide grumbling back and forth is so much more interesting to watch than a perfectly flat expanse of water and the stretch of empty beach feels as if you’ve been let in on a secret the summer visitors don’t know about.

It’s even better if the weather is miserable, it gives you a free pass to enjoy where you are staying, whether you’re having a lazy morning in at pier house.

But if the weather is fine you’ve hit the jackpot. I have yet to find a better feeling than being wrapped up in a huge scarf and hat with a warm sun on my face in October.

Westward Ho Beachawarded Blue Flag 2023 for 20th year in a row

According to Torridge District Council it remains in the elite of sites awarded both accolades with a total of 78 sites awarded the Blue Flag and 128 displaying Seaside Awards. The internationally recognised Blue Flag is considered to be the gold standard for beaches and is awarded annually by environmental charity Keep Britain Today.

In order to qualify for this award, the beach must satisfy standards in in four categories and against 33 individual targets such as environmental education and information, water quality, environmental management including litter and waste, safety and services such as first aid and lifeguards.

8 Lighthouse View, Westward Ho likes to recognise and applaud all those who have worked so hard to protect and improve some of our best-loved and most popular beaches. The collective efforts of beach managers, volunteers, residents and businesses all contribute to the success of these sites in achieving the incredibly high standards demanded.
