A stylishly converted stable, dating back to 1821, this characterful property still retains many original features. Benchmark Cottage sits at Stage 12 of the renowned Coast-to-Coast route. It features a south-facing garden with generous outdoor seating, woodland aspect and on-site parking. You have the choice from the parking bay of stone steps, or you can walk uphill to the cottage entrance, with two patio areas with outdoor seating plus a barbecue as well as a lawned area so that you can chase the sun throughout the day. Last week we were graced by this magnificent sparrow hawk. We’ve known that we have it at the cottage and, along with our guests, have caught fleeting sights of it performing high-speed acrobats through the air.

Extraordinarily, this female alighted for just a few seconds on the cottage railings - allowing our accomplished guest/photographer, Dale Parfitt, a brief moment to capture her through his lens! 📷🦅

Another superb addition to the cottage wildlife images he’s already produced. And this is certainly one I cannot stop marvelling at!

“Where to go for a special drink?”

We were more than happy this week to recommend my favourite Cafe Montmartre, Whitby to our guests - former Lord and Lady Mayor(ess) of York, Susan and Dave Taylor.

So much so, I figured I ought to revisit it myself today after the usual Saturday shop to confirm my choice 😁👌

An authentic, French-owned café-bar, tucked away in Whitby’s market place; friendly staff, no food but an astonishing array of cocktails, warm beverages and an extensive drinks menu worthy of any Parisian hidey-hole.

For the perfect Classic Kir or Champagne Royale there is no other! 🥂🍾

IT’S SUMMER FACELIFT TIME FOR !

We’ve a couple of days before our next visitors arrive, so are sneaking in a complete patio re-point to make it all smooth and good as new to enhance the cottage’s outdoor/entertainment space ✨

I’m tempted to say “what a grind!” - 😁 - but am rather excited by all the machinery, the noise and dust that will no doubt result in a visual, if not practical, transformation to brighten and safeguard the patio areas for years to come!

I’d just been to collect my litre of farm milk from when I ended up happily stuck behind this tractor in neighbouring Lealholm.

Nothing could typify the landscape round here more … working farms, fabulously cosy pubs, ancient bridges over the vibrant River Esk.

We love our village cricket! My Grandmother was a cricket captain, I captained the ‘Glaisdale Women & Girls’ team this year and continue as Club captain to promote Women and Girls in the game. So it’s fitting that the cottage gets involved too!!

🌈 A VERY HAPPY EASTER ! 🌈

In 7th century England, after the collapse of the Roman Empire, there was heated debate between followers of Irish and Roman christian tradition on when to celebrate Easter.

At the Synod of Whitby in 664 AD, missionaries gathered at Whitby Abbey to put forward their respective arguments and a formula was finally settled upon – one that is still used today to determine the dates of Easter.

How symbolic that, on this glorious Good Friday, a should form over this monumental Whitby landmark as we approached the town from the marina 😮🌈🔔

What a gloriously crisp, sunny morning in !

What started off with thick frosts on the moors has transformed into an early taste of Summer even, complete with the Yellow Boat already taking visitors out on sea tours from the harbour!

Abbey Wharf is the perfect morning cuppa vantage point to watch the bustle of this working town…as well as serving a great morning latte from 11am (which I’ve just polished off!) ☕️⚓️⛴️

For our South/West Yorkshire guests - and anyone passing through Barnsley at any point in their travels or interested in organic farming - PLEASE follow and stop by Milk from the Hills !

We just met this beautiful young farming couple with their gorgeous 5 month old baby girl on a break at our favourite The Jolly Fisherman pub in Craster, Northumberland.

They are family-run dairy farmers and Yorkshire Post award winners, selling fresh milk on site and from vending machines - whole, natural or in many flavours in those lovely old fashioned glass bottles!

We love their ethos : farm to fridge in fact!

And whilst we love all things North Yorkshire, that includes South Yorkshire too ❤️

Ok. We keep getting this question from our guests, so we’ll spill the beans!

One cornerstone of the guest experiences we’re determined to create is GREAT COMFORT: high quality furnishings and home décor touches, so you feel totally at ease and relaxed in a warm, welcoming and restful home.

Local and bespoke is our motto. And so we scoured around and found this sofa across the moor in Pickering at - complete with outsized footstool!

A treasure trove of unique interiors and well worth a browse! (And we didn’t/couldn’t just stop at the sofa! 😁)

A rare guilty pleasure of mine, after tending to the cottage for guest arrivals, is to take myself off to by the sea at Sandsend. Their fish tacos are unmissable. Each day brings fresh catch to choose from, which means it may vary. Today’s was tuna, sea bass, mackerel or monkfish🐟

But tacos and a lovely fresh Sauvignon it was, after a seaglass hunt on my childhood beach - and the mindful pleasure of ‘nesting up’ for Mike and his wife (winner of our raffle prize) 🏆

Sunrise over Glaisdale: This morning Pete was back off to sea for his next assignment. Returning from the 4am Durham Tees Airport run at 6am, just a mile away from my warm, beckoning bed, I happened upon the oranges and purples of this gorgeous sunrise over Glaisdale out of Egton lane.

I simply had to share. Seeing the moors swathed in such awesome colours kept me on my feet and motivated for the rest of the day! 😁🙏🏻🌅

It was a “Stop the Car!” moment this evening as Pete and I crossed the moors, homeward bound above Lealholm (Oakley Walls) this evening. Vivid, unfiltered sunset colours reflect the moorland palette so often seen in winter light up here 🌅

In the village we are blessed to have The Robinson Institute, up hill from the cottage, which is a beautiful hall open for hire and with a packed year-round events calendar that attracts people far and wide.

Guests to the cottage can join Yoga classes during their stay, host their own special occasion, enjoy local theatre - or even attend concerts as we did last night, when international recording artist & singer/songwriter David Neil Crabtree staged a launch concert for his new album ‘I just Want to Tell You’.

A sunshine window yesterday, in the aftermath of Storm Babet, allowed Pete and I to discover a bewildering array of marine life we’d rarely have chance to see at such close quarters - and in such volume!

Washed up , sea anemones, , brown and , including whitings and codlings, covered huge areas of beach and attracted bands of oyster catchers, and sandpipers.

An exciting, but poignant find. Though one lobster was rescued 🙏🏻💙🦞

Skinninggrove is an unspoilt stretch of beach 20 minutes from the cottage. A real hidden gem.

There are few beach walks as rich in Jurassic treasures, rock pools and tidal sea life as the easy stretch of beach and slate scars from Saltwick Bay to Whitby. Whether spotting “Tell Pies” (Hermit Crabs), going #flither picking” (limpet picking) or cracking open fossil stones to reveal millennia-old ammonites, you’re at risk of getting completely absorbed in anything other than walking here!Follow literally in the footprints of Dinosaurs. Stegosaurus and Theropod footprints have been discovered here in fallen sandstone along this magnificently evocative stretch of the North Sea Coast!

The cottage garden transformation is complete! 🎉 With the help of local creative blacksmiths @fenmoorblacksmiths, we were able to realise our ambition to open up the outdoor seating area and create for guests a beautiful vantage point down-village, toward the River Esk. We wanted to hardwire into the railing design a feature our guests truly tell us they love - secure and uninterrupted views of our rich birdlife from regularly stocked bird feeders.
