The construction industry is facing a mental health crisis. Construction workers are statistically less than half as likely to suffer from work related stress, depression or anxiety than the working population as a whole. But they are four times more likely to take their own lives.

HSE inspections will focus on workplace noise in 2024-25. On-site noise control and hearing protection will be reviewed, ensuring effective control measures are in place to protect workers.

Companies are required to show that they have assessed the risks and selected appropriate tools, equipment and hearing protection to reduce noise to a safe level.

When using hearing protection at work, think CUFF:

• C – Condition. Is the hearing protection in good condition?
• U – Use. Are workers using hearing protection when it is needed?
• F – Fit the ear. Is the hearing protection fitted properly?
• F – Fit for purpose. Has the hearing protection been correctly specified?

❗📢 UK doctors are raising awareness of the increased risk of silicosis arising from engineered stone exposure and urging the government to ban the material. A new report(1) details the first eight cases in the UK, all of which involved workers dry cutting and polishing worktops with inadequate safety measures.

Engineered stone can contain substantially more silica than natural stone – over 90%, compared with less than 45% in granite.

The UK/EU exposure limit for silica is 0.1mg/m3 over an 8-hour period, but it is important to remember that there is no ‘safe’ limit – inhaling any amount of silica dust is harmful.

Exposure must be reduced as much as possible through effective engineering controls and work practices:

- Use wet methods to cut and work materials.
- Install extraction or ventilation equipment.
- Use on-tool dust suppression.
- When cleaning up, use wet sweeping methods or HEPA-filtered vacuums.
- Do not use compressed air to clean clothing or surfaces.

When selecting respiratory protective equipment (RPE) consider:

- Protection level – Must offer a UK Assigned Protection Factor of at least 20.
- Filter efficiency – Must have a high-efficiency particulate filter, e.g. P3.
- Fit testing – Every tight-fitting RPE wearer must be fit tested.
- Facial hair – Tight-fitting RPE wearers must be clean-shaven in the area of the face seal.
- Loose-fitting – Loose-fitting PAPRs do not require fit testing and can be suitable for use with facial hair.

❗Face size and shape are important considerations when selecting RPE. The mask must fit the wearer’s facial features to create a seal and provide protection.

Respirators are available in a range of sizes to fit different facial dimensions. To ensure a good fit, face shape and size must be considered and, if possible, measured prior to selection.

What is the difference between EN 397 and EN 12492 chinstraps? 👷‍♂️

EN 397 – Industrial Safety Helmets

Chinstraps are optional for EN 397 helmets. 2-, 3- and 4-point chinstraps can be supplied pre-fitted to the helmet or purchased as an accessory to be fitted by the user, however this is not a mandatory requirement.

Optional chinstraps for industrial safety helmets must release under a force of 150 – 250N if caught up creating danger for the user. This reduces the risk of injury in case the strap becomes snagged on machinery in an industrial environment.

EN 12492 – Helmets for Mountaineers

Chinstraps are mandatory for EN 12492 helmets, forming an integral part of the retention system. All helmets meeting the mountaineering standard are supplied with a chinstrap fitted.

The retention system is tested to ensure the strap does not break or stretch when a force of 500N is applied. There are also some test requirements to ensure that the helmet cannot roll off the head if caught at the front or the rear. This maximises protection during a fall, helping to keep the helmet secure in case of repeated impacts from swinging or multiple falling objects.
