Cultural and Historical Tourism in Georgia

Georgia is the heaven for those who fond of historical sights. Vestiges of Georgia’s infant days are everywhere. Dig up early history at Dmanisi, an inconspicuous town inhabited by the first Europeans some 1.8 million years ago. Take a romantic trip with Argonauts, helping Jason in his quest for Medea and the Golden Fleece in the Colchis wonderland at Kutaisi, or revive pre-Christian belief at the pagan cave city of Uplistsikhe.

With the passing of centuries, life in Georgia began to change. Christianity arrived in the 4th century, bringing new beginnings and ushering in changes to lifestyle, architecture, art and music. Today you can visit the remains of Georgia’s first Christian church in Nekresi, tour the 6th century Jvari Monastery near Mtskheta and sense the spiritual strength permeating Svetistkoveli Cathedral, guardian of the most sacred relic in the country, The Robe of Christ.

The ancient ruins of Ujarma Fortress, fortified villages of Shatili and Mutso, mysterious towers of Svaneti, secrets of Ikalto and Gelati Academies and labyrinth pathways of Vardzia Caves all convey stories of bravery, courage and the untamed character of the Georgian people.

Add romantic vibes to your trip by capturing sunsets along the Black Sea coastline or sailing through Martvili Canyon. Get imaginative at Prometheus Cave and feel childlike delight on the cable cars in Chiatura as they clamorously ply you with stories from the Soviet era.

It is hard if ever possible to overestimate what cultural and historical tourism offers in Georgia. Vibrant traditional dances and concerts filled with the melodies of Georgian polyphonic songs capture your senses, while tours of museums, art galleries and exhibition halls reveal the secrets of bygone eras. To feel like a true Georgian, simply attend a local feast, where an exquisite blend of delicious food, unique wine and world-famous hospitality will transform your vacation into an unforgettable experience.

Gobustan Mud Volcanoes

Out of the eight hundred mud volcanoes found across the globe, approximately half of them are situated in Azerbaijan. Some of these natural formations are quite massive, reaching several hundred meters in height. The volcanoes are dispersed throughout the rocky deserts of the Gobustan Reserve, located 60 kilometers from Baku.

🌋Scientists estimate these mud mounds to be up to 25 million years old!

Venturing towards the Gobustan mud volcanoes feels like stepping onto another planet. Barren soil creates peculiar patterns underfoot, while light gray low hills stretch out in the distance, and no trees, bushes, or grass can be found nearby. It's easy to peer into the meter-high volcanoes and capture stunning photos of gas bubbles as they hiss and gurgle. For taller volcanoes, you can climb their sloping sides to reach extinct craters.

The volcanic mud offers health benefits; bathing in cool natural pools can alleviate symptoms associated with musculoskeletal and cardiovascular diseases.

🌋Gobustan's Most Renowned Volcanoes
Toragay is one of the world's largest mud volcanoes, having remained dormant for the past few years and displaying no signs of activity. Its form has settled into the shape we can observe today. This mud colossus stands at 400 meters high, with a crater measuring 150 meters in diameter.

Ayranteken is another sizable volcano that, at certain points in its history, reached heights of up to 500 meters above sea level. This volcano periodically erupts, spewing thick gray mud over the surrounding area. The mud soon solidifies, transforming the landscape anew.

Goturdag, situated 3 kilometers from Ayranteken, is characterized by an unusual eruption style. Mud surges upward, forming a column of dense "lava" that solidifies and subsequently slides down the outer walls of the hill. This process results in the volcano's unique shape.

Is Georgia a safe country?

When choosing a travel destination, one of the first questions on many people’s minds is safety. Thankfully, Georgia is a safe destination for tourists, whether you’re a solo female traveller, a backpacker, an experienced digital nomad or a family with small children. Georgia tourism statistics indicate that since the mid-2000s, the number of tourists visiting Georgia and its Black Sea coastline has been increasing each year, and with this steady increase the country continues to take proactive steps in its fight against crime and corruption.

Georgia has one of the lowest crime rates in all of Europe. The World Economic Forum honored the country by ranking it 34th in terms of national security, and according to a 2023 travel advisory published by the US State Department, Georgia was declared among the safest countries in the world for US travelers.

The country is often referred to as a “heathy island” and considered a safe destination for travel by leading world health organizations. Additionally, most Georgian roads have been paved, the rail lines have been re-laid and traffic regulations are up-to-date. Police officers patrol the cities nonstop, particularly the tourist-heavy areas, to ensure safety and order.

If you cannot speak a word of Georgian, you’re in good company among most of its tourists. Thankfully, English can be found on most road signs, taxi apps, bus stops, metro announcements and restaurant menus. Most young people communicate quite well in English and will willingly teach you the most useful Georgian words and phrases.

7. Bibi-Heybat Mosque
Bibi-Heybat Mosque is one of the most beautiful mosques of the capital of Azerbaijan, which has an ancient history and a complicated fate. It was originally erected in the XIII century, and the building we see now is an exact copy of the original construction. The mosque stood in Baku for at least seven centuries, but in the 1930s, when the Bolshevik government declared the struggle against any religious movements, the building was blown up. Only 60 years later the mosque was erected again in its original place, becoming a symbol of revival and faith.

10. Ismailia Palace (Ismailiyya)
Ismailia Palace (Ismailiyya), an incredibly beautiful building, completes our top 10 best attractions in Baku. This architectural masterpiece, erected in the early 20th century, was built in memory of the son of Azerbaijani oil producer Musa Nagiyev, Ismail, who died of tuberculosis at a young age.
