The Dutch allowed the slave trade to continue until 1814.

Legend has it that the Mona monkeys of Tafi-Atome have lived there for over 200 years, inhabiting the tropical forest.

The villagers launched greater efforts to safeguard its forest and monkeys in 1996, as well as offering excursions to guests.

The monkey population has expanded to around 200 as a result of these efforts, and the forest, with its various species of birds and butterflies, has been conserved. The playful monkeys are wild, although they frequently approach guests up close.
