OPEN LETTER TO THE TRANSPORT MINISTER

November 1, 2022.

Considering the current economic challenges in Ghana, particularly on the fuel hikes and their various effects on transport operations, road crashes would likely increase if mitigating actions are not put in place as soon as possible.

A professional driver, like any other worker, wants to make a profit to maintain his business and livelihood. However, due to the high increment of petroleum products and the inability of the transport ministry to adjust transportation fares to meet operational costs concurrently, the transport operators are unable to make the required revenue for operational expenses, not to even break even.
The prime objective of the transport industry is to ensure safe arrival, and satisfaction at an acceptable cost to the driver, passengers, and other stakeholders. Nonetheless, due to the high operational cost of running their fleet, the drivers especially, the mini-bus operators are compelled to speed up to make more trips with all associated carelessness and disregard for safety.

For the key objective of transportation to be guaranteed—safe travel, I recommend that the ministry of transport must:

• deploy Police personnel on the roads,
• intensify road safety education,
• apply the automatic adjustment formula on transportation fares whenever there are fuel price hikes which affect spare parts, and
• stabilize fuel and spare parts prices.

We, with all urgency as a country, must do everything reasonably possible to relieve transport operators from their plight in other not to defeat the objective of safety in transportation, without which the repercussions on humanity will be devastating and unbearable!

If indeed water is life, then transportation is life. Let us make it safe (because we cannot do without it).

Hmmmmm!!! Please where are the traumatised, the injured, and, the maimed??? Hmmm my heart!!! I can't stop weeping!

The motorised transport is creating more disabled people, and it has always been my worries, and this is PREVENTABLE!!! BUT...! Hmmmmm!!!
