Το Νέο Φρούριο της Κέρκυρας ξεκίνησε να κτίζεται το 16ο αιώνα από τους Βενετσιάνους, ενώ ολοκληρώθηκε το 17ο αιώνα ( 1576-1645 ). Πρωτεργάτης του κτίσματος θεωρείται ο Βενετσιάνος αρχιτέκτονας Francisco Vitelli. Ο λόγος που κτίστηκε το Νέο Φρούριο ήταν η χρησιμοποίηση του στην ασφάλεια της πόλης, κάτι το οποίο δεν μπορούσε να εξασφαλίσει πλέον το Παλαιό Φρούριο. Το τραγικό και συνάμα εντυπωσιακό α
υτού του κτίσματος είναι ότι για την οικοδόμηση του χρειάστηκε να κατεδαφιστούν περίπου 2000 σπίτια και άλλα κτίρια.
Το φρούριο δέχτηκε σοβαρά πλήγματα τόσο από τις επιθέσεις-βομβαρδισμούς του Β' παγκοσμίου πολέμου όσο και κατά την ένωση των Επτανήσων με την υπόλοιπη Ελλάδα, όταν οι Μεγάλες Δυνάμεις απαίτησαν τα γκρεμιστεί μεγάλο μέρος του, όπως και τα περισσότερα τείχη που το ένωναν με το Παλαιό Φρούριο.
Το Νέο Φρούριο αποτελείται από δύο επίπεδα, κάτι το οποίο δεν είναι τυχαίο και εξυπηρετεί συγκεκριμένους σκοπούς. Ειδικότερα, το χαμηλότερο επίπεδο προστάτευε το λιμάνι ενώ το υψηλότερο επίπεδο οχύρωσης είχε ως αρμοδιότητα του, την προστασία της υπαίθρου ή γενικότερα την επίβλεψη της ενδοχώρας.
Οι βασικές πύλες της πόλης που παρείχαν επικοινωνία με θάλασσα και γύρω οικισμούς ήταν τέσσερις: α) η Βασιλική πύλη (Porta Reale), β) η Πύλη Ραϊμόνδου (Porta Raimonda), γ) η Πύλη της Σπηλιάς (Porta di Spilea) και δ) η Πύλη του Αγ. Νικολάου (Porta S. Nicolo).
Το Νέο Φρούριο αποτελεί ελεύθερα επισκέψιμα μνημείο, ενώ η πρόσβαση σε αυτό γίνεται είτε μέσω της κύριας πύλης του από το Παλιό Λιμάνι είτε από μικρότερη πύλη, στα νότια, από την οδό Λοχαγού Σπ. Βεΐκου.

The New Fortress of Corfu started to be built in the 16th century by the Venetians, and was completed in the 17th century (1576-1645). The reason it was built in New Castle was the use of the safety of the city, which could not now obtain the Old Fortress. The tragic, yet impressive this building is that the building had to be demolished around 2000 homes and other buildings. The fort received severe blows from both attacks-bombings of World War II and during the union of the Ionian Islands with Greece, when the Great Powers demanded the demolished much of, like most of the walls that united with the Old Fortress. The new fortress consists of two levels, which are not random and serve specific purposes. In particular, the lowest level protected the harbor while the highest level of fortification has the responsibility, protection of the countryside or general supervision of the interior. The main gates of the city that provide communication with the sea and surrounding villages were four: a) the Royal Gate (Porta Reale), b) Raimondou Gate (Porta Raimonda), c) Cave of the Gate (Porta di Spilea) and d) the Gate of St. The new fortress is freely visited monument, while access to it is either through the main gate of the Old Port or smaller gate to the south, the street Captain Veikou Sp.
