~ • Straight out of the sea • ~ Fish day today in Crete? All you need to know is where the fishermen are moored! You go there n the morning at the time, when fishermen return with the catch of the night. And just take what they have catched! 🐟

"Pity, nothing good for today... Only three fish out of a 30-meter net," says fisherman Adonis. He also adds that the beginning of February is always like this: the fish leave the shores and pull further into the sea, for which Adonis's boat is too small.

"Take the biggest, at least the boat's fuel will pay off for me," he says. So this is a tuna cousin called Atlantic bonito – a fish of the mackerel family. Therefore Adonis advises to cook it in the oven with herbs, lemon and drizzled with olive oil.

Let's get to the kitchen, lets cook a fish! 🧑‍🍳

What are you going to cook for lunch or dinner today? 😋 ☀️

~ • Where shepherds pray for their goats • ~ When hiking in Crete you never know where the mountain path is going to carry you ⛰ But almost often those paths have a peculiar history that they usually hide.

An unheard-of story about Saint Charalambos we have learn walking the abandoned path on the slopes of Psiloritis mountains. There are only a few churches devoted to him in Crete-all mainly near the mountains where the shepherds live.

Agios Charalambos reside in the second centuary AD has been a bishop pf Magnesia or Magnesia on the Maeander (nowdays Turkey) and lived for 113 years, eventually became the patron saint of animals and new harvest.

For more than 1,500 years, the Greek Orthodox believed that prayers to Agios Charalambos would stave off hunger, protect them from unlucky accidents and bring prosperity to the home. Moreover, his name means the brightness: translated from the Greek – Charalambos (Greek: Χαράλαμπος) – radiated with joy.

It is said that while still alive, Saint Charalambos trampled the devil. Therefore, in sacred paintings he is often depicted with a black devil under his feet. Strange as it may seem,
the fire-spitting devil is in feminine form.

We we surprised not only by the icons found in the church but also by the votive offerings – thin metal prayer plates next to them. For the first time, we saw animals depicted in those plates: goats, sheep, horses. Of course, who else may visit a lonely church in the mountains, if not the shepherds with their daily troubles and prayers to the Agios Chalarambos.

Would you be really keen to challenge yourself or perhaps want to hike at a such mysterious path? ⏳ 📜 ☀️

Check the photo carousel: 4th photo – thin metal prayer plates, 5th photo – holy picture of Agios Chalarambos.

~ • There was a shipyard here • ~ The Minoans who lived in Crete 4000 years ago built their vessels here! ⛵️ You don't have to be a historian or geologist to discover a man-made estuary on a rocky beach.

Take a look at the first photo: Jurgita is standing in the middle of a rectangle of rocks framed. It appears like a port or pier has been built here, but the waves of the sea have swept away what man once had built ⚒

After examining this rugged coastline on the northern shore of Crete in front of Dia Island, the archaeologists concluded that there was a shipyard around 3,500 to 4,000 years ago in the Minoan period. The 50-metre-long yard of ships built by the Minoans of Crete.

Same Minoans who introduced us to legends of King Minas, the son of Zeus, the labyrinth of Minotaur, a monster of Crete who had the body of a man and the head of a bull.

It was revealed that there was a village near the shipyard that is now under the sea 🌊 As a result of the eruption in Santorini in ~1450 BC, the northern coast of Crete changed considerably. That is why the shipyard itself sunk underwater.

Thousands of years have gone by. The northern wall of the shipyard was completely swallowed up by the sea, and the southern part is so straight that there is no doubt of humans handwork 4000 years ago.

Are you keen to learn the other enigmas of Cretan history? ⏳ ⛅️ 🏺

Indeed, we have seen the first pinkish-white charming blossoms, touched them and rejoiced that the almond tree the same as a human heart is feeling the upcoming spring! 💐 ☀️

~ • To the top • ~ "Let's walk up to this hill" – Jurgita told me one day checking weather forecast 🌤 for the next few days here in Crete. Seems we expect quite bad weather following with rain and strong winds. Therefore we used our chance to enjoy quite a few sun rays and winter greenery in the very old olive groove. The centuries-old olive trees – pruned many times, even cut up to the roots regrowth manifesting their triumph of immortality.

A stone boundaries built a century or two ago, framing the old path between the evergreen olives which still produce the olives. Walking the path between the crowns of the trees glistening with greenish silvery, it is not possible to overlook a top of the hill ⛰ Furthermore strange feeling arise that something interesting is going to be discovered in that place.

Yes, indeed! There is a wooden table on the top covered with loads of ceramic fragments. Who put these fragments together, when and why? How old are these ceramic parts of the wares? Maybe they are old as the olive trees just below on the slope? 🏺 🌿

Olive 😋☀🍯
This is not a joke, but the real olive made from mashed olives, green apples and a delicious mix of honey, sugar and glucose. The sweetness does not overwhelm the taste of olives - it feels like eating olives or olive spread.

We have meet Giorgia, the daughter of the family producing olive oil here in Eastern . She explained that olive marmalade pairs quite well with Cretan graviera or any other kind of hard cheese. The family mainly produce the olive oil but she was always wondering what else they could make from the

Actually a lot of: starting from sour olive spreads of various flavors and ending with sweets treats such as olive marmalade or olive lukumi sweets. By the way, there is also ice cream made from olive oil.
Have you ever tried such incredible as olive marmalade or ice cream? Highly recommended!

~ • Did you ever taste the lotus? 🍑• ~ Strangely enough, but by the word 'lotus' (Greek: λωτός) the Greeks name for persimmons - the fruit of the ebony tree, which pleases the palate with every bite of a pleasant sweetness 🤗

"Diospyros kaki" is a deciduous tree native to China that was taken to Japan and Korea many centuries ago. Obviously the name of the fruit vary depending on the country and language. The English common name is derived from the Algonquin language, in which the word persimmon means “dried fruit.” Russians name is "churma", derived from the farsi (Persian language) "khormalu'" meaning date plum.
"Kaki", its Japanese name, was chosen to be the tree’s species name.

However, since the ancient times use own version of the name. It is "lotus" - both for fruit and tree. It is hard to explain why.
Dozen of etymological dictionaries were checked but no explanation why Greeks call the lotus, actually used for another plant, lotus flower (Nelumbo nucifera, Nelumbonaceae) - the symbol of purity and perfection in Buddhism and Taoism.

Most of those dictionaries refer to the mythological "lotophages" people, who lived at the coast of Northern Africa and mentioned in Homer's Odyssey. Those people consumed only fruits of lotus, since tasted for the first time they passed into oblivion. So, it is not clear at all what those mystical "lotus" fruits were 🤔
Maybe persimmons? Maybe, cause it is possible to forget everything about in world when you feel such a divine sweetness taste at your mouth.

By the way, the old varieties of never ripen on the trees to eat them immediately when picked up. If you will try - you will be surprised of the pungent bitter taste. They lose their pungent taste in several days (sometimes weeks) after were picked and kept aside - thus revealing the sweetness of persimmons.

Old persimmon varieties also include 'Λωτός ο Κρητικός' - a Cretan - persimmon variety that still grows on the island. However, even now, during the harvest season, trees cannot be easily found. Unfortunately, less people keep persimmon trees at their fruit gardens. Usually we see them in old or abandoned gardens. But when somebody gives you such a treat straight from a tree - it's absolutely worth to wait for one or two weeks for the fruit get ready for to divine sweet bite! 😋 🍑 ☀️

~ • Straightly off the tree • ~ Freshly picked berries or fruits from a tree are the most delicious, isn't it? 😋
We are lucky to be able to collect fresh fruits all year around here in Crete. At the beginning of December yummy berries of strawberrytrees get ripen and those trees are called "koumara" in cretan dialect.

Strawberry trees blooming right now and their bell type blossoms remind tiny lilies of the valley. Every tree hurry up to ripen delicious berries - cherry-sized, sweet, just melting in the mouth 🥰

The locals use them in pastries, make jams and a sort of liqueur. Our friend Adonis place his beehives next to the strawberry trees, so his bees can collect "koumaromelo" - the honey of strawberry blossoms, and it is so flavourful!
There are plenty of berries on each tree this year, doesn't it look amazing?

Would you be keen to try those heavenly tasteful strawberries on the trees? 🍓🍓🍓

~ • Cretan hospitality • ~ It is a pleasant surprise to be invited by the local mate to his mountain house after a nice walk in the highlands.
No matter at all if you see that person for the very first time in your life! However, the doors of the house are widely opened. This is an amazing experience of real Cretan hospitality 😄🥰
Firstly, you are offered a glass of water, then a glass (or two, or three....) of wine 😊🙃, next to it you are served what is available today: olives, traditional dried whole-grain bread "paksimadia" with feta cheese and capers, marinated artichokes with olive oil and lemon juice 🍴, also freshly picked oranges 🍊 sliced and sprinkled with cinnamon. And great company to talk, discuss and laugh!

~ • Meditation • ~ Does it help? What it means? Wherever you are, it is great to start new day, new week, new month or any other significant phase of your life ☀️

The Greeks have their own word to describe . Instead of the Latin 'meditatio', which literally means contemplation with great concentration, the Greeks use the word 'dialogismos' (gr. Διαλoγισμός). It has the same roots as the well known term ‘dialogue’.

While the apparently first suffix of the two words 'dia' (gr. διά) is more in line with number 2, in Greek it is still used as an adverb in terms of transformation or shift, by means of a tool, process or motive. And that means that should never be associated with controversy.

Are you in the mood to have your inner dialog with ?

Here we are invite you to watch a video about grandpa Leonid's carpet paradise at his lovey shop on the slopes of Mount Parnassus in mainland Greece.

After our stay in such amazing place, we climbed the mountains of Crete to search for the real local weavers. Cretan grannies are still weaving goat or sheep wool with their hands and using old looms. Winter is coming and everybody need good carpet which will keep houses warm during the winter months.

Ladies are really busy at this time but kindly invite us to show their looms and threads and share their jokes while we drink a cup of hot mountain herb tea.

Would you like such a cup of tea garnished with droll cretan stories?

Wondering if someone was trying to count the colours of the sun?

Sun changes colours many times in a day: in the morning, when pinkish orange rising sun become golden flash then turns into the silver hue disc, and in the evening it resembles a bronze sculpture blurred by the autum clouds 🌟🌅

Have you ever noticed such amazing variegation?

~ • ⛰ On the ancient paths 🥾 • ~

1000 years - is it a lot a or a little?
I always wonder that when walking the old mountain paths built by the islanders thousand years ago 🧙‍♂️

It is quite hard to imagine the way these people lived. However, we can be absolutely sure - we are lucky to see the same views and surrounding landscape. 🔭...
This overlap in the perceptions of the land and landscape artistically interpreted of the countryside and mountains where the time seems to slow down.

Actually thousand years is not a lot since there are much older paved paths. Some of them counting more than three thousand years and were built by Eteocretans - the pre-Greek inhabitants of Crete.
Are you keen to explore such old paths traveling one day in the beautiful island of Crete?

•~ Time to harvest ~ •
Kiwis 🥝 are grow even in Crete but are still kind of exotic! You can find them but these are rare in the gardens of locals.
Most popular autumn fruits are pomegranates, quinces, pears, apples and even autumn strawberries 🍊🍋🍎🍓
The cretans say that a harvesting circle starts in autumn as the fruits here ripens here all year round.
Therefore if you will visit the island in winter, spring or summer be ready to try these fruits:

• Citrus in winter!
December begins with mandarins, followed by clementines, grapefruits, bergamots, kinkans or kumquats , lemons, green lemons and all kinds of oranges in January: blood oranges, tangerines, mandarins! The selection of orange varieties become less since March, however juicy "Valencia" variety is available until next October. The first strawberries appear in late February to early March.

• Spring vibes
When strawberries still reign in the farmer's markets in spring, the first melons appear, which start growing in April.
Watermelons are already popping up next to the melons in the middle of May and cherries at the end of the month. A lot of cherries 🍒🍒 In June, the spring ends with the first apricots.

• Summer - the fruity horn of Amalthea
The head begins to turn around seeing the fruit shelves in the summer which are full of melons and watermelons, peaches, nectarines, various kinds of plums. At the end of July, early sweet figs are ready to be picked and at the beginning of August, the first grapes wait to be tasted. The selection of grape varieties increases until mid-September. It is a time of the mega explosion of grape varieties 🍇🍇🍇

• Autumn colours
In autumn, besides to the pomegranates, quinces, pears, apples, strawberries and kiwis mentioned above, more exotic fruits that are
planted by local enthusiasts should be mentioned as well: papayas, mangos, passion fruits and guavas 🥭🍑 grow in Crete.
Carobs sweeten our life giving a strength along with the nuts: almonds, pistachios, walnuts and finally chestnuts which are ready to be picked up in November and December.

What is you favorite fruit? Which one of Cretan fruity delight you would like to try?

• ~ Wine for the weddings ~ •

We were welcomed by Dimitra, the daughter of the winemaker Sifis (also the owner of lovely cat and two dogs😁)

- Dimitra, why have we never seen your wine in any store in Crete? Where does all your wine is stored? - We asked when arrived to one of the mysterious wineries on the island.

"To the weddings," Dimitra said 🍇🍇
- And to other celebrations like baptism or namedays. Our specialization is 'romeiko' and 'maruvas' wine which made from it. No any weddings in western Crete are possible without this wine!

According to the traditions, when a child is born, the father makes and hides one large barrel of 'romeiko' grape wine for many years - until the wedding of his offspring. This is how 'maruvas' was born - the word in the Cretan dialect means 'romeiko' wine kept in an oak barrel for a very long time 😀🍷

Not everybody has their own 'romeiko' wine now, but to this day, the tradition of starting a wedding with 'maruva' is still alive.
It is a quite strong wine, usually aged in barrels for 12 years or more. It is sweet or semi-sweet liqueur-like wine, usually served at the beginning of the celebrations as an aperitif.

- I haven't had to taste a light 'romeiko' wine, whatever it is: dry or sweet... 😉

- Such 'romeiko' grapes are already high in sugar and are therefore usually picked when not fully ripe, so that the wine is not particularly strong. I always recommend start getting to know 'maruvas' from a simple 'romeiko' wine tasting, Dimitra adds.

- "I am pretty sure we will have wine tastings with our guests next year," - we thanked Dimitra and her father, Sifis for the warm welcome and Cretan hospitality. Actually, we agreed to visit them with our travelers during the gastronomic tours.

Would you like to find yourself in the ‘romeiko’ vineyards 🍇🌿 with CreteMorphosis next August, September or October?

+ 25-26 ° C is not the temperature of the air, but the temperature of the sea water at the beaches of Crete. The summer wasn’t too hot in Crete this year, but the heat was enough for the sea to warm up just like every fall so you could swim and swim and swim 🌊🏊‍♀️🤽‍♀️
Despite brief rainfall forecast the sea will cool down. The temperature is usually above + 18 ° C until December keeping all the winter swimmers really happy. After sunny days, you can swim until Christmas, when winter will start on the island.

• ~ 11 grape varieties of Crete ~ •

If there's one thing we know for sure about wine, it's that we usually enjoy tasting it.
‘Vidiano’ smells like apricots, ‘Plito’ and ‘Vilana’ smell of fresh lemons, ‘Dafni’ surprises with an unexpected bay leaf aroma, 'Kotsifali’ - with a sweet ofor of prunes. But let's visit the vineyards - the place were grapes grow and where the juice of grapes turn into a wine 🍇🍇🍇

Words are not enough to explain why ‘Moschato spinas’ variety is called the treasure of Cretan winemakers, and ‘Mandilari’ is called wild grape variety, even it is prevalent in the local vineyards. Or why ‘Liatiko’ and ‘Malvazia’ are causing controversy among both dry and sweet wine lovers. And finally, why is it said that ‘Thrapsathiri’ and ‘Romeiko’ best reveal of the gastronomic character of Crete?

Cretans believe that all five senses are needed to understand their wine - it needs to be seen, touched, smelled, tasted and even heard! This can be done in one or more of the 30 officially registered Cretan wineries or... in one of several hundreds private vineyards. No one on the island forbids making wine in their backyard, so almost every family has a relative or neighbor who provides wine that they won’t buy in any shop.

George - the owner of the vineyard has never hired workers to harvest his grapes. During the harvest season the friends usually help each other. The pay - is a lovely company, delicious lunch in the terrace and an invitation to taste this year vine in a couple of months. We harvested grapes, squeezed, eat hearty delicious meal and a had fun. Now let's wait patiently... for a tasting 🧐

Would you like to take part in such an event? Follow

By the way, which of the 11 Cretan grape varieties have you already tasted? Have you enjoyed the vine tasting? Have you learned about the Cretan grapes?

• ~ Just two days a week ~ •⁣⁣

"It looks like we were there, on the top of the mountain at least a day ago," said Aurelia and Harimantas, Žiedūna and Arūnas - two
Lithuanian couples who joined the two-day CretaMorphoses programme some time ago. What can be better rather than a cup of strong Greek coffee in shadow of huge spruce. We started our walk very early in the morning that day. It was an amazing walk in the mountains following the ancient waterways of the Minoan period.

The path actually was founded during Dark Ages of Greece when the Achaean, Pelas, Doric tribes started to invade the island of Crete. Thus, they assimilated with the Eteocrettians who survived the Santorini eruption and began to establish their settlements. No rush, since it takes time to perceive that the place is unique and suddenly you realise the heritage that nature gradually embraces.

We were in no hurry: we admired the views we shared the stories - just as we always do during the holidays in Crete in the Greek "siga-siga" (slowly-slowly) style. This is the magic of the island: you can remain without haste and see much much more. "Although we only traveled for two days together, it seems like a week has passed," Aurelia and Harimantas said when we came back to the village by the sea. After their holidays, we received a message: "It was a great experience, and we would love to repeat it!"

We too! Absolutely!😀

• ~ The weaver. In the Cretan villages ~ •⁣⁣

"Promise to come again!" Asked us κυρία Aristea in the village high in the mountains of Crete. She asked only for our promise to be back ...

Aristea unfolded her hand-woven rugs and showed us hand-crafted bed and table sheets. These are the treasures of old Cretan classic hand-crafted rustic textile.
Since the year started with truly unpleasant consequences she was not very happy.
"Disappointing year," she comforted.
"First of all the olive harvest was quite poor, then a lot of snow and this pandemic afterwards!"
I didn't sell any rugs this year and this is my only source of livelihood.

She sat down at the weaving loom, swept carefully the rug she had started to weave. "I didn't do anything else in my life - I just weaved, embroidered... 🧶🧵🏵
Many years ago we had a cooperative with local women here in a village and teaseled wool together.
"We worked so hard, I still have a lot of wool", Kυρία Aristea headed up to open her wooden chest filled with real cretan wool yarn.
"There is no cretan wool in Crete anymore! Nowdays all sheep's wool is disposed of as worthless and needless. Nobody is going to teasel it, since one kilogram (!) costs less than one euro only ..."

Aristea just waived her hand aside and turned her glance to the colorful bottles.
"I kept those and dye wool by myself until now" , she told and sat at her weaving loom again. Actually the loom had belonged to her mother and Aristea is using it for 60 years already. "I am 86", she admitted. "I’m still looking for someone to share my knowledge and craft with. No one in the village wants to. Everybody is looking for an easier life..."

Aristea sighs deeply, then smiles, take a quick look at her workshops shelves.
"Made a lot of beautiful rugs! Come back with your friends and travelers, they will see real craft that might vanish". 🤓👋

We promised to be back.
If you wish to come up with our promise, write us a facebook message, comment or fill in the request on www.CretaMorphosis.lt
