This week, as we continue to look at ways to childproof our homes. Let us discuss securing the doors.
Certain rooms in your home may be dangerous for the little ones. You can cover the doorknobs to make it hard for little hands to get a grip, turn, and open these doors.
Covers should be placed on all doors leading out of your home and bathroom doors. It is also a good idea to put them on the doors of any other room you don't want your child to enter. This way, you would feel comfortable knowing your toddler is safe.

As we continue to look at ways to childproof our homes, Tip #2 reminds us to always put dangerous items out of reach and sight of kids.
As children continue to grow and develop, they begin to explore more. Children can get their hands on chemicals when they are stored in places the little ones can easily reach. Young children also tend to put everything in their mouths. So, we must never forget to store small objects, flammable items, and other choking hazards far away from kids.
Continue to follow our page for more tips on how to keep your home safe for children.

Childproofing your home gives your baby and toddlers a safe place to play and explore and helps prevent injuries.
From the moment your baby arrives home, keeping them safe is no easy task. This becomes even more difficult when they start to creep and walk. Children are curious by nature, and though it may not be possible to childproof your home thoroughly, there are steps that you can take to protect children from injury.
One of the ways you can keep your child safe is to inspect everything! Check your furniture, stairs, household goods for potential dangers, and install protective devices. Try to look for protective devices that are sturdy enough to withstand attempts from children to open them. This way, your mind can be at ease knowing your child is safe.

Security lighting can improve your home security system!
There are different ways in which we can use security lights. However, landscape lighting is one of the best security light approaches available.
Landscape lighting is not always about having the loudest or brightest lights in the neighbourhood. Make it beautiful and tasteful! This way, your neighbours are not complaining about the lights, and it can also bring you peace of mind knowing you and your loved ones are safe.
It's important to mention that even the best security lighting is no replacement for a proper security system. Security lighting is an extra measure, reinforcing a clear message that your property is not worth the trouble.
A light shining directly on a door will become a door they don't want to approach.

Securing your home helps protect your personal belongings, but it also gives you peace of mind and keeps you and your family safe. One of the ways you can ensure you secure your home is by checking to ensure your door and windows are closed before you go to bed or leave your home.
Additionally, always change the door locks If you're moving into a residence that someone else used to call home. That way, there won't be people with keys to your house.
Follow those simple steps to protect your family and personal property.

Composting is one essential aspect of running a sustainable home. Composting food waste reduces the need for chemical fertilisers. It encourages the production of beneficial bacteria and fungi that breaks down organised matter to create humus, a rich nutrient-filled material.
Studies found that composting organic waste versus landfilling can reduce more than 50% of carbon dioxide-equivalent greenhouse gas emissions.
Some of the food items that could compost:
✅Fruits and vegetables
✅Eggshells
✅Tea bags
✅Nutshells

One of the ways you can make your home more sustainable is by using low-flow shower heads. These shower heads restrict the volume of water dispensed per minute, thus reducing the amount of water used while showering.
Energy is needed to filter, heat, and pump water to your home, so reducing our water use also reduces your carbon footprint. Using less water keeps more in our ecosystems and helps keep wetland habitats topped up for animals like otters, water voles, herons, and fish.
Save water, save energy!

Colonial homes were described by Zillow as home located in or near New England which were built between the 18th and 19th century.
The most obvious attribute of a colonial home is its symmetry. Colonial-style homes normally have a square or rectangle shape, with the door located in the exact center and the same number of windows reflected perfectly on either side. They traditionally have two to three stories with similar, traditional room layouts. These homes have:
✅High-peaked roofs with little to no roof overhang
✅Massive central or end chimneys
✅Pillars, dormer windows and brick detailing (mostly in later colonial-style homes)

A condominium, called “condo” for short, is a privately-owned individual unit within a community of other units. Condo owners jointly own shared common areas, such as pools, garages, elevators and outside hallways and gyms, to name a few.
While some condos are found in high-rise buildings, there are also some detached condos. In general, the owner typically owns the interior of the condo and the structural components of exterior walls.
Condos are best for persons who do not want the responsibility of owning their own house. They are usually a great option as your first property!

Multifamily homes contain two or more units within the same building. These units can be similar in shape or size or not. A multi-family home is used to accommodate more than one family living independently. Individual families may often purchase a multifamily dwelling. They will live in one part and rent another, which brings in additional income.
Multifamily housing is viewed as the best and most affordable housing option. And not just affordable for families, but people at various stages in their lives.

“Defeating racism, tribalism, intolerance and all forms of discrimination will liberate us all, victim and perpetrator alike.” –Ban Ki-moon
Racism has been an ongoing issue. It is the belief that different races have different abilities or qualities which has led people to think that one race is superior to another. Unfortunately, due to this thinking, people face discrimination because of the colour of their skin, the texture of their hair, religion, country of origin, amongst others.
Today, we join with the rest of the world to call for an end to racial discrimination. We encourage you to do the same since: “It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.” – Audre Lorde

The term “Victorian Architecture” refers to styles that emerged in 1830 and 1910 during the reign of Queen Victoria.
These houses are built with rich colour combinations and striking features, and the windows are designed conventionally for an aesthetic outlook. The Victorian homes are accessorized with old pictures, colourful fabric, wallpapers, framed mirrors, and artwork. The floor plans are well detailed and made with wood or tiling.
It also has a geometric pattern of checkerboard or herring board. In place of rugs, hand-painted clothes were used. Check https://bit.ly/37sCsAa for more information.

Many of us grow up knowing what type of house we want to have. Then, there are the others who just make the decision “when that time comes.” Earlier this year, we learnt that Guyana’s construction industry is projected to grow up to 10.1% this year. So, if you are one of the lucky people building a house, we want to make it easy for you to make that decision.
Over the next few weeks, we will share different house designs, starting with the Bungalow. These houses are small and easy to maintain and known to be great homes for the elderly or people with disabilities. They are also cost-efficient, and because bungalows occupy more square footage than multi-story homes, they tend to allow more space for modifications and additions.
