Fortress of St Lawrence is also known as ΛGibraltar of DubrovnikΛ and is one of the most impressive locations in Dubrovnik.
It was built on the 37m high cliff outside the western part of the city walls. The fortress has a triangular shape with three terraces, the sea side of the fortress has walls that are thick 12 m (40 feet) and the ones facing the land are thick 60 cm (2 feet). The main reason for this was not only in the case of the attack of a foreign enemy but also the possible rebellion of the Commander in charge of the fortress. The thinner part of the wall could never hold against the firepower from fort Bokar. St Lawrence fortress along with fort Bokar also protect the oldest port of the City.
Inside of the fortress, there are three terraces, the widest one is looking south towards the sea. For centuries, this fortress was the greatest defender of the City's freedom, above its entrance there is a message engraved; NON BENE PRO TOTO LIBERTAS VENDITUR AURO, meaning; Freedom is not sold for all the gold in the world. Today the fortress is known as one of the most beautiful stages for the plays such as ΛHamletΛ during the Dubrovnik Summer festival.

Fish Restaurant Proto - Dubrovnik
Sipan Island is historically interesting. During the 15th century it was a chic summer getaway for the very best Dubrovnik families, many of whom built palaces on the island. SuΔuraΔ is village stretched along the harbour, dominated by the 16th-century castle of the wealthy StijepoviΔ-SkoΔibuha family from Dubrovnik. Tomo Skocibuha was a seafaring merchant who amassed an impressive fortune during Dubrovnik's golden years, enough to buy him a lifestyle equal to the nobility. In addition to his house in Dubrovnik, he constructed this little pied-a terre in 1539. Next to it is a tall tower built in 1577 as a defence against pirates.

Fortress Saint Ivan π€
In 1346 Dubrovnik government concluded to build a fort on the outer dock of the port Β Dock Fort. The building started that year and lasted for several years. This fort is still visible as a integral part of St. John fortress. The outline of this initial fort is visible on the western wall of St. John fortress. This initial fort was connected with the City with a defensive wall and the gates passing through those walls (Croatian Β βVrata mulaβ Β Dock Gates).
On the very corner of the City, near the defensive wall stood the old quadrilateral fort that everyone called βFort GunduliΔβ. In the beginning of the 15th century a low semicircular bastion was built forward of the Dock Port. The newly built bastion effectively integrated as the outer wall of the Dock Fort. In the year 1500 the upgrade of old GunduliΔ started. This fort was sometimes called the Fort of St. John according to the nearby church. The old quadrilateral fort was upgraded into a much bigger fort with semicircular form and a pentagonal bastion in front.
In 1552, the merger of all bastions commenced in a grand upgrade of the whole fortification complex according to the designs of master architect Paskoje MiliΔeviΔ. Both forts, Gundulic fort and Dock fort, with their respective bastions were merged into a single building which got a new official name: βThe fortress of St John at the Dockβ. The merger was completed in 1557. π€
