A few Airport & Flight Tips -

Don’t drink the coffee, bring your own headphones, and don’t bother locking your suitcase. Those are just a few of the tips being offered by anonymous airline and airport employees in a recent discussion thread on Reddit. Here are a few tips and tricks picked up from the the conversation:

- Locks on Zippered Suitcases are Useless.
According to user royalsiblings, “You can pop a zipper with a pen and drag the locked zipper pulls around the bag to close them back up. I've done this many times to identify bags that are tagless and locked. Exactly like this."
Ever wondered why there is only one particular brand of luggage lock available at airport shops, and why they're so much more expensive? Those locks are actually fitted with a secondary key hole, for a skeleton key supplied to all customs personnel. This allows locks to be opened and baggage checked, without the need of any destruction of either lock, or zipper.

- Bring Your Own Headphones.
“I used to work for warehouse that supplied a certain airline with items. The headsets that are given to you are not new, despite being wrapped up. They are taken off the flight, “cleaned”, and then packaged again,” said Reddit user ichigo29.
The special 2 prong jack plug adaptors needed to fit your seat audio socket are very cheap, and easily available on line, or from high street electronic parts stores.

- Remove Old Flight Tags.
“Not a secret, just common sense; the reason some bags miss their flight or get misrouted is because passengers don't remove old tags. It confuses handlers as well as the conveyor belt scanners. I see it happen all the time,” said Redditor –aurelius.

- Be Kind to Employees.
“The nicer you are to us, the more we can do for you. Ran out of beef? Ask politely and we will get you a fillet mignon from first class. Your neighbour is noisy? Tell us nicely and we might be able to get you a better seat,” said flight attendant and Redditor ihatcoe

- “Be nice to the ticket agent and they will pretty much always let you get away with overweight bags. If you were funny, I'd even not charge you for bags,” said WorseToWorser.

- Buy and Fly on a Tuesday.
“I work Revenue Management for an airline. On average, the cheapest time to BUY a ticket is Tuesday afternoon. The cheapest time to FLY is Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday. This applies to US flights in my experience,” said Redditor Drama_Llama

- Maybe Skip the Coffee.
“The coffee is absolutely disgusting because the no one washes the container that goes out every morning. The station agents who get paid way too little don't give a s**t about cleaning it. I certainly didn't when I worked for AA. Also, because we weren't given the proper supplies to clean it. We pretty much just rinsed it out and dumped coffee into it,” said WorseToWorser.

- Bring non-perfumed baby wipes, and eye-drops.
With long haul flights, up to 18 hours of recycled air is most definitely going to have your skin feeling like crumpled tissue paper. If you're lucky enough to get some sleep on the flight, waking up on one, only to find you've still got another 12 hours to go, can make you wish you'd never bothered. But, it's quite amazing how refreshing a few drops in to dry eyes, as well as a quick wipe of the, face, mouth, neck, and hands can be.

We’ve all heard of the terms globetrotters, day trippers and wanderlust but have you heard of glamping, a solivagant or mancations? I started travel blogging about four months ago and I cherish words in the same way that I love travel. Learning a new word is always thrilling and it would be an absolute dream to make ‘wanderphile’ part of the everyday lexicon.

Below is a glossary of some modern travel words that are unique and inspire travel. A couple of them are not well known but perhaps should be and a couple are well established only in certain countries.

1. Couchsurfing (n)

This term was commonly used to describe the practice of moving from one friend’s house to the other often sleeping on the couch or floor while you were temporarily of no fixed abode. A practice Aussies and Kiwis who found themselves fresh off the plane in London often employed for a few months. More recently couchsurfing is the name of a website where you can organise to stay with a registered user in their houses all around the world without money exchanging hands. This is a great way to meet new and fascinating people while experiencing a cultural exchange. Couchsurfing currently claims it is “a global community of 10 million people in more than 200,000 cities”.

2. Staycation (n)

A vacation that is spent at home enjoying time to relax and explore your local area. This term came into use in the early 2000s but became extremely popular during the Global Financial Crisis (2007-2010) as would-be holidaymakers searched for cheaper vacation options. Advantages include the lack of accommodation costs and there’s no need to pack and then unpack. It’s also fun to experience your own “backyard” as often we venture further afield and don’t appreciate sights closer to home.

3. Flashpacker (n)

Not to be confused with a naked backpacker! Flashpackers are usually a little bit older than the standard beer swilling, party hostel staying backpacker. They are similar to their younger selves in that they also have an intrepid ethos of adventure and fun yet they are likely to have a little extra cash and experience. The extra cash means that flashpackers might sometimes spend a bit more on accommodation in order to avoid the 20 bed dorms or choose a 1 hour flight instead of the packed train, followed by a local bus, another local bus and then a ferry. Or they might splash out on meals in restaurants instead of ramen noodles and white bread in the hostel kitchen.

4. Bratpacker (n)

Now bratpackers are very likely to be eating ramen noodles or $1 rice on a daily basis as their priority is usually around drinking copious amounts of beer or buckets full of the local alcohol. Which could also lead to a naked backpacker... Think of groups like the large number of partying Australian backpackers acting like larrikans in Bali or the backpackers who treat every night as a Full Moon party in Thailand. Travellers who have no awareness or respect for local customs and cultures and are more interested in getting ripped than experiencing the country they are in.

5. Mancation (n)

A vacation for men only, where woman are banned and the guys do some sort of “manly” activity like go spear fishing, play poker in Vegas or head to a rowdy sports game final. They usually involve lots of alcohol, swearing and talking BS. I’m not really sure if there is an equivalent for the girls. Maybe we should come up with one?

6. Glamping (n)

Glamping is to camping what flashpacking is to backpacking. This is camping in luxury and can be in house-like tents or something creative like a yurt. There is no struggling with tent instructions and pegs here or tossing and turning on a half deflated air mattress. Glamping gives you the best of both worlds!

7. Grey nomad (n)

I’m aspiring to be a grey nomad one day! A grey nomad is a mature aged traveler with a keen sense of adventure who travels around a country staying in a campervan, caravan or tent for a reasonably long time. This is a commonly used term in Australian and New Zealand but I don’t see why it shouldn’t be used elsewhere?!

8. Solivagant (n)

Since solo travel is my favourite way of travelling this latin word that means solitary wanderer is apt. Pronounced so·liv·a·gant \sōˈlivəgənt\ I’m hoping this word will overtake the mainstream use of ‘solo traveler’ as it sounds so much more exotic yeah?

9. Wayfarer (n)

You might recognize this word more as a popular style of Ray-Ban sunglasses than a term that means a person who travels from place to place, usually on foot. I wish I had known the meaning of this word earlier as I think it would have made a great name for my blog.

10. Fernweh (n)

This word has been seen all over recently. Often cited as an alternative to the slightly overused term wanderlust. It is a German word that means a craving for travel or distant places. Germann describes it as the opposite of homesickness.

Bonus travel word - Wanderlist!

I haven’t seen this modern travel word around that much and I really think it’s a better alternative to the phrase ‘bucket list’ although also slightly different. A wanderlist is a list of travel based activities and sights you want to experience. My wanderlist is forever growing! You’d think that as you get older the list would get shorter as you tick them off but no... the research and exposure to other travel bloggers provides endless inspiration and additions to the list.

I am a wayfarer, a flashpacker, a solivigant, once or twice a bratpacker, a travel addict obsessed with travel...a wanderphile.

What are your favorite travel words? Have I missed any?

The mysterious "Sang Hyang Dedari" (Balinese Trance Dance)

This dance is normally performed to entertain the gods and the goddesses - to appease, or to ask for their blessings. A bad harvest or an outbreak of illness may warrant such a dance.

The preparation for this dance may take months, as prepubescent girls, who have never danced before, are trained to relax their mind so as to be able to go into a trance state.
Daily they pay visits to a priest, at the local temple, and lessons are undertaken. When the priest concludes that the young girls are indeed ready, and the omens are favorable, the dance will be performed in the inner court of the temple.
Dressed in elaborate attire and immersed in the smoke of burning incense, the two young girls slowly dance as the accompanying chant of the village women gradually relax, and help transport them into a the desired trance state. The Sanskrit chants are an invitation to deities to receive the vessels presented.
Once possessed, a dancer will perform movements that they have did not master in their months of training. They may act and sound like a horse or a monkey; at times, they may end up dancing while balancing, almost horizontal, on their back, supported with a piece of bamboo held by two men on both ends.
When they do collapse, the village women once again begin rapid chanting, to ask whichever gods or goddesses are present to peacefully leave the bodies of the young girls. If the spirits refuse, dancing will continue, until they agree. At which point the girls will simply stop in their tracks and once again collapse, exhausted, for the final time.
