The Poseidonion Grand Hotel

This month, we present our favourite hotel in Greece. The Poseidonion Grand Hotel is a truly unique example of discreet luxury, reminiscent of a bygone aristocratic, charm and elegance filled era. This historical gem has something woven into its fabric that simply cannot be replicated in modern hotels, no matter how hard they may endeavour.

At 102 years old the Poseidonion is one of the oldest and most beautiful hotels in Greece. This landmark of Spetses is known as the jewel of this small but perfectly formed island just off mainland Greece. Built by Sotirios Anargyros, the hotel has a distinctive aristocratic style usually associated with the classic grand hotels of the South of France. Over the years many of Greece and Europe’s great and good have frequented the hotel and continue to do so due to its unyielding high-level of service and uniquely elegant atmosphere.

The Poseidonion underwent an extensive five-year renovation and refurbishment during which the character of the hotel was preserved and enhanced. Every aspect and architectural detail, including hand painted tiles and marble staircases were lovingly restored in good time for the hotel’s 100th anniversary. This combined with the amazing views of the Saronic Gulf make you feel as though you have been transported back a century to a time of understated luxury and elegance.

High up in the hills of Spetses, The Poseidonion has its very own Organic farm which exclusively supplies its three phenomenal restaurants. The hotel’s cuisine has been long applauded for its fine dinging however, this year an exciting new farm-to-table concept, “Bostani”, has been added to its already impressive roster. “On the Verandah” is an award winning restaurant that serves flavours and dishes from across Greece, whilst the “Library Brassiere” offers the distinctive flavours an Athenian cuisine.

A romantic memento

The Grand Bazaar is mesmerizingly exotic and exciting place to visit and explore. It is also possible the best place in Istanbul to purchase a memento of your trip. The bazaar has many different sections but the most suited to Valentines Day is the jeweller’s section, where a wonderful treasure trove of traditional, contemporary, eastern and western jewellery can be found. Baklava for two!

Why not pop the traditional strawberries dipped in chocolate to one side this year and treat yourselves to a romantic Eastern treat instead. Baklava is delicious, there is no two ways about it: layers of light Filo pastry filled with ground nuts and dripping in honey... what more can you ask for!? Perfectly accompanied by a little Turkish tea or coffee, this is a great mid-afternoon or after-dinner pick me up following a long day of site seeing and or shopping.
