Athlone Marina, sets the standard for other marinas on the River Shannon.

It is located between the town bridge and the railway bridge, and can be accessed from Abbey Road.

The Marina has berthing spaces for up to 60 boats, and excellent amenities such as a secure safe berthing - coded gate entry/exit, a small garden/lawn area, showers and electricity.

Bandit country - March 1834!
Somewhere between Kiltoom and Knockcroghery this unfortunate man was beaten up and had his barrel of whiskey stolen.
(A Hogshead is a type of oak whiskey barrel.)
“On Wednesday last as a man named Headen was returning from this town with a Hogshead of whiskey, which he had purchased at Mr O’Beirne’s distillery, he was attacked between Kiltoom and Knockcroghery by a number of country people; who after beating him severely, knocked the end out of the hogshead, the contents of which was speedily distributed among the plunderers. ; a person who passed the spot where the outrage took place, a short time after it occurred, informed us that he perceived groups of men, women and even children lying drunk in the adjacent fields”. - Athlone Independent.
