Happy International #irishcoffeeday
#Foynes and flying boats are closely connected to #Irishcoffee, playing a significant role in the invention of this favourite Irish treat. Of course, as with anything in Ireland, the weather played a role, too.
In 1943, Brendan O’Regan opened a restaurant and coffee shop in the Foynes terminal building. It quickly became regarded as one of the best restaurants in Ireland. Chef Joe Sheridan, originally from Castlederg, County Tyrone, had been recruited by O’Regan to run the kitchen.
Late one night in the winter of 1943, a flight left Foynes for New York. After flying for several hours in bad weather, the captain decided to return to Foynes to wait for safer conditions. A Morse code message was sent to the Foynes control tower to inform them of the return. Staff were called back in and the passengers were brought to the restaurant upon landing for food and drink.
The passengers were cold and sleepy. They asked Joe Sheridan to make something that would keep them awake, but also would keep them warm, and this is how Joe came up with the drink.
As the passengers tasted it they wondered whether this was Brazilian coffee, or Kenyan, or Sumatran, but Joe told them: “No, this is Irish coffee”

Stand up and fight!
Limerick legend and local soprano sings Stand up and fight, the Limerick fight song!
Stand Up And Fight has been a Munster Rugby anthem for over 20 years with the song initially brought to the province by former Team Manager Brian O’Brien, a member of Munster Rugby’s Hall of Fame, in 1999.
For his initiation, the Shannon man belted out Stand Up And Fight and it quickly caught on with the squad and management.
The timing of its introduction was perfect as the Munster side were big underdogs at the time and the anthem fitted perfectly with their never-say-die attitude as they took on big-spending sides like Saracens, Stade Francais and Toulouse.
“Until you hear that bell, that final bell, stand up and fight like hell.”
The 1999/2000 campaign saw Munster capture the Interprovincial Championship with six wins from six as Declan Kidney’s side defied the odds to reach their first European Cup final, a defeat to Northampton in Twickenham.
Munster beat Leinster 31-20 at Cork Con’s Temple Hill in the season opener before a 67-17 victory over Connacht in Galway.
A 25-24 win away in Belfast, Munster’s first victory away in Ulster for 19 years, set the scene for O’Brien to perform his first big rendition of his party piece in the Europe Hotel afterwards.
Wishing you all a very merry Christmas
I’m taking some time out for Christmas but will continue walking tours of Limerick and Adare on January the 4th 2022

Éadaí Traidisiúnta - Traditional Clothes
“The Aran Sweater”
Na hOileáin Árann/The Aran Islands are situated on the west coast of Ireland in front of the Galway Bay.
As can be seen from the video on the history of the Aran sweater, a very strong relationship exists between the Aran Sweater stiching and Celtic art with many Aran patterns found on Celtic stones and crosses. As time went on, each family on the Aran Islands developed their own stitching and patterns.
Fishermen would wear the Aran sweater, not only to keep them warm from the cold weather, but also as a religious garment to safeguard them from the perilous sea.
Unfortunately, any drowned fishermen were identified by the pattern of their Aran sweaters. The Aran sweater is still worn today and many fashion designers have been influenced in their clothing designs by the various styles of Aran stitching

The best Irish Coffees are of course made in Foynes, where they were invented by Joe Sheridan.
Invented at the Flying Boat Museum in Foynes the original is still the best‼️

Granagh backs Amanda tracfor run
Great to see a huge turnout for #granaghbacksamanda
https://www.gofundme.com/f/granagh-backs-amanda/
Amanda originally hails from Newtownshandrum, Co. Cork and has been married and living in Granagh, Co. Limerick for the past 8 years. Amanda is married to local man Daniel and is a doting Mum to 4 wonderful children, Sean (11), Oliver (7), Killian (6) and Amelia (4). As well as being a busy full time Mum Amanda is also a full time support giver to her son Oliver who has special needs. In February 2021 Amanda was diagnosed with breast cancer and is currently undergoing treatment in the amazing care of University Hospital Limerick (UHL).
As a small rural community in #WestLimerick, we wanted to show our support to Amanda and her family and let them know they are not alone on this journey. A number of fundraising initiatives are taking place on Sunday the 24th Oct 2021. Among these are a tractor/vintage car run, a cake sale, a draw, a sponsored walk/cycle, followed by a fun auction afterwards in The Rock Bar, Granagh.
Our local schools and wider community have been very supportive of this great cause and are running various fundraisers in the schools.
*All donations and support on the day would be greatly appreciated *

How beautiful does the Woodlands Hotel look in this short video?
They have opened their Treehouse this year and it has been a huge success.
With the weather improving and the country slowly reopening this success story will get even more successful!
