Last chance to save County Fermanagh’s Heritage site and surrounding landscape from a Glamping site.
Beautiful Fermanagh, a county rich in history and heritage, with spiritual, peaceful, unspoilt settings like this at Keenaghan Lough, outside Belleek, is currently under threat from a major development of Glamping pods, a large amenities building and a car park for almost 100 vehicles.
This Heritage site is one of the oldest, most significant historic sites in all of Ireland. Dating back to medieval times, this particular monastic site has the remains of Keenaghan Abbey and Cemetery, a Crannog, a Janus Head figure (found here in more recent years) and to this day is surrounded by rare thatched cottages, like Breen’s, Loughlin’s and Keenaghan Cottage. Indicating just how important this area was throughout history.
This planning proposal breaches many policies, including the SPPS and Fermanagh & Omagh District Council’s new Local Development Plan (2030) and According to the Historic Environment Division (HED) this will have “an adverse impact upon the integrity of the setting of a regionally important archaeological monument” and a “Significant Adverse Impact on the Listed Buildings” surrounding the proposed development.
Keenaghan Cottage greatly supports Tourism, but not at the expense of so much more important factors such as Heritage, Conservation, Road Safety, Wildlife, Environmental issues and so on.
This ‘green’ field site (not within walking distance to the village of Belleek) is one of the last remaining unspoilt, picture postcard settings in the country, Is this the correct place for a major development?
Let’s hope and pray Fermanagh & Omagh District Council do the correct thing and protect this precious area for the generations to come. 🙏
