Kevin and Sue Kelly from Carlow walking around Ireland, Europe and other parts of the world visiting as many beaches as possible. Kevin and Sue stress the importance of "Leaving no trace" but your footsteps and where you can pick up some of the rubbish on the beach
Kevin and Sue Kelly have been doing a lot of traveling over the past few years, most of it forgotten now. It won`t be forgotten anymo

re they will travel much more over the next few years, documenting where is the best and safest places to wild camp with a tent or small camper. They always say the most important thing is not even the birds should know you are there and "leave no trace"

Time to start walking again , out for a bit of practice in the woods around Portlaw. Last year with bad weather ☁️ and increased workload, we did nothing, can't let that happen this year. So our plan this year is a few tracks like the Wicklow way.

2 weeks ago , we left the road and took to the waters. We spent 2 nights on islands on lough Ree. I always wanted to bake bread and I baked my first loaf of bread in a Dutch oven. Tomorrow we will canoe the river Barrow and camp along the way.

Tomorrow myself and Sue will start the EuroVelo route 2 going east to west beginning at Spencer dock in Dublin, see how far we can get in 2 days. The Royal canal way to Mullingar and then on the old rail track to Athlone. From Athlone it will be by Road to Galway.
We would love to do this for charity maybe some of the smaller ones such as Autism or Down Syndrome, but for the moment we are undecided on this or just keep walking for ourselves.
Wild camping tomorrow night and its promised cold at night. We have our new sleeping bags from the Great Outdoors on Georges St Dublin. For now its onwards and upwards

I have always looked forward to tomorrow because no matter how bad this day is tomorrow is a brand new day.

Yesterday morning myself and Sue climbed with Charlie but not in Croagh Patrick but a much easier and smaller Mt leinster.
We only raised a few 100 euro because we got side tracked with Ukraine where we raised nearly €4,000. Of course we didn't want to do anything to make Ben and Chaimae any less important.

Today we stopped off for a beautiful walk, I will have to give it 9 out 10.
Directions
Abbeyleix Bog (or Killamuck Bog) is located on the southern edge of Abbeyleix town. The entrance to the bog is located

immediately south of the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel. The Manor Hotel is the last building on the left as you leave Abbeyleix Town on the N8 heading in the Cork direction. There is ample parking around the hotel carpark. Leave the carpark through the gap in the beech hedge, turn left and and you will see an interpretative board marking the entrance to the bog. (There is also a "Killamuck Bog" sign)The bog is divided in two by the old railway line (Portlaoise - Kilkenny) which runs north to south. The old line is raised above the level of the general bog site and provides a good dry walking route. The line is rutted in places but is just about good enough to push a buggy. We hope to be able to provide a high quality walking route which will be fully wheelchair accessible in the future

Eurovelo 6 is a route that I have been looking at for some time now and when it's ok to travel again I hope we will walk and cycle some of this route.
The French section starts at St Nazaire and then enters Switzerland north of Basel. It also runs through the French town of Dole that is twined with Carlow. With almost 1.300 km of completely developed roads, EuroVelo 6 is one of the easiest and most pleasant in France. In Germany, it follows the Danube all the way to the Black Sea

In December 2012 myself and Tom were watching a movie called "The Way" by Martin Sheen , well I was hooked. Tom was only 17 at this time and I turned to him and asked will we cycle the Camino, needless to say Tom didn't take any persuading. Right away I phoned Sue`s uncle Roger in Norfolk to see if he would join us he didn't need any time to think about it either, the answer was YES.
Myself and Tom went out to buy top of the range bikes, expensive gear and detailed maps , ohh and of course a serious training plan.
Naaa we did not , cheap bike , unsuitable clothing , thanks to Roger he did buy maps and nearly no training at all.
On the 21st of April 2013 the day after Toms 18th Birthday we started early on a Sunday morning from Carlow Cathedral , a group of about 30 cycled out of the town with us , after a blessing in the Cathedral , well at least we got the blessing , because something from beyond this world got us there 3 weeks later .

A lot of people may not be aware but the new proposed greenway from Galway to Athlone of which 2 of the proposed routes pass only few miles from where I was born will continue on to Dublin. Then by ferry to Holyhead the route goes south to Bristol and then east to Harwich where you take ferry to Hook Of Holland.
This Eurovelo Route 2 continues across Holland, Germany, Poland, Belarus eventually finishing up in Moscow 5,500km away.
Only 1/2 the route is developed so far across Europe , but what an adventure this would be to cycle or even walk

Derek Cullen Outdoors posted this photo and no we are not going to walk , its taking us long enough to walk around Ireland.
Derek cycled all the way to the Southern Tip of South Africa a few years ago.
The longest road in the world to walk, is from Cape Town (South Africa) to Magadan (Russia). No need for planes or boats, there are bridges. It's a 22,387 Km and it takes 4,492 hours to travel or maybe a bit more if you would like to rest your bones and make coffee. That would mean 187 days walking nonstop, or 561 days walking 8 hours a day. Along the way, you pass through 17 countries, six time zones and all seasons of the year.

Day 3 walking The Barrow way.
30km from Carlow to Goresbridge. Today we walked less and carried more in the cart 25kg. The track is flat so we still have to try this out with a few hills. It's 1 more days hike to St Mullens and another day by road to Ballyhack where we finished last August. From there we will start walking the Waterford coast. Today we had the company of our friend John Tully for some of the track

DAY 1 The Barrow Way
Last Saturday myself and Sue started walking the Barrow way as Covid19 restrictions prevent us from walking the coast just yet.
Very early Saturday morning we started at Robertstown Co Kildare, it’s still a short walk to where the Grand canal and the Barrow Canal split at Lowtown. There is quite a lot of work going on making the track into a greenway, so at times you must use the opposite side , mostly ok but do not use the alternative side before Rathangan , if you do you will come out in the old sewage works and its difficult to get out through a small opening in the gate.
This first leg we walked 34km and pulled 16kg in our new wheelie cart from Radical design www.radicaldesign.com they are costly but well worth it.
We finished up the day at Fisherstown bridge Co Laois 34km. Have to say we felt great, not sore or tired.
The next day we walked 37km to Carlow, yes tired and wrecked after that.
Tomorrow we start in Carlow, I will increase the weight in the cart and walk less, we are trying to see what our limit is for both walking and carrying.
