A 315-million-year-old fossil sponge has been discovered near the Cliffs of Moher in Co Clare by the The Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark Geologist Dr Eamon Doyle!

Sponges are living creatures that are found in the sea. With a very basic body, they do not have a nervous system or circulatory system.

The new species of fossil sponge it dates back to when Co Clare was located close to the Equator.

“This is an exceptionally large example of a type of fossil sponge that was previously only known from much older rocks elsewhere in the world,” Dr Doyle said.

“It is the first record of this type of fossil sponge from Ireland and its excellent preservation is highly unusual,” he added.

The sponge, named Cyathophycus balor is the largest example of its kind anywhere in the world and is up to 50cm tall.

Carlisle Bridge was built in 1790 as one of the links in the Wide Streets Commissioners' plan to connect north and south with a great axial route. 90 years later - on this day in 1880 - it re-opened having been widened and renamed O’Connell Bridge.

Happy ! 🐦🌊

Did you know that the Cliffs of Moher Experience are one of the best places to watch birds? These majestic cliffs host major colonies of nesting sea birds and are one of the country’s most important bird-breeding sites and the area has been designated a Special Protection Area (SPA) for Birds under the EU Birds Directive.

Over 20 different species can be seen, including guillemots, razorbills, puffins, kittiwakes, and fulmars! You may also be lucky enough to see endangered bird species like choughs and peregrine falcons.🦅

TOP TIP: When you come to visit, bring along a pair of binoculars to enhance your viewing experience. If you don't have any, just stop by our reception and ask one of our friendly team members for a loaner pair for free. 💙
