The winter solstice event at Newgrange was streamed live today. If you missed it, you can watch it here. 5,200 years ago this Mega lithic passage tomb was constructed to illuminate the inner chamber down a 60ft passage into the mound- at dawn on the shortest day of the year- and uniquely- the light shone in via the light box over the door.

My bad - I forgot to post the last day of our online summer camp - sorry!

Friday 17th July was our last day of online camp (for now; we have good news coming shortly!!). Whilst this is not comparable to having a camp in person, we had way more fun than we anticipated. Our final theme was Chivalry and Heraldry in medieval Europe. We decided what was important to each of us, our values. And then we chose colours and symbols that we felt represented those and made our own Norman shields to show that off. Lisanne told the incredible story of the boar and lizard on the O’Hanlon crest. It has been a wonderful two weeks and we look forward to seeing everyone again, online, but especially in person!

Thursday was Egypt day on our online camp. It was nice to take a break from Ireland and travel to the land of the Pharaohs. Aside from opening up a whole new chapter of dad jokes(!), we learned all about what life was like in Egypt thousands of years ago, including all the amazing things they invented, like toothpaste and paper. Our craft was super fun; we made a headdress and a necklace, and the results are so colourful! Finally, Lisanne told us the story of the little boy who dropped his water pot and discovered Tutankhamun’s tomb, and what happened after he ran and told Carter what he had found – all as a Pharoah!

The second day of our second week of camp and we went back in time to the oldest known megalithic tomb in Ireland, Poulnabrone, in the Burren, Co. Clare. Excavated by Dr Ann Lynch in the 1990s and part of a recent major DNA study published in Nature, we looked at this iconic site from the perspective of the first farmers arriving in Ireland some 6,000 years ago. We started by thinking about the proliferation of incredible stone monuments all over the world at this period of human history. We imaged a family group, equipped with the understanding of how to grow crops and domesticate animals, as they travelled through the Burren along a ravine. About 5.800 years ago, they decided to build a dolmen in a clearing, and they used this place for ceremonies and to inter remains of their ancestors. For our craft, we made models of Poulnabrone using salt dough, and for fun we also made a bone pen and an arrowhead for the end of a pencil. Check out the incredible results.

The first day of the second week of our online camp. We looked at the history of Piracy, from the kidnapping of Julius Caesar in 79BCE through the Barbary pirates who made hay in the Mediterranean during the Crusades, to the 'Golden Age of Piracy' in the Caribbean from the 16th to the 19th century. We made cool pirates hats and cutlasses.
